State Classifications

For Calif.....

Each CIF Section must establish enrollment ranges for Division I-V that fall within the following CBEDS parameters (Revised June 2002 Executive Committee).

Mississippi has 5 Classifications for 258 schools.
Schools are reclassified every 2 years. The following alignments are for football only. Different sports fall into different alignments because some schools do not compete in some sports. Additionally, Mississippi is divided into North and South Half's within each of the 5 classification. Some schools actually fall in the North in some sports and South in others. They also may be in different districts in different sports within their Half. (OK, it's weird here.)

Football alignments:
5A is the 32 largest schools, 4 schools in each of 8 Districts.
Currently that is enrollments of 1,030 to 2,245.

4A is the next 56 largest, (#33-#88) with 7 schools in 8 Districts.
Currently that is enrollments of 534-1,029.

3A is the next 56, (#89-#144) also with 7 schools in 8 Districts.
Currently that is enrollments of 348-533.

2A is the next 57, (#143-#21) with 7 schools in 7 Districts and 8 schools in the 8th District.
Currently that is enrollments of 212-342.

1A is the last 57 schools (#202-#258), with 7 schools in 7 Districts and 6 schools in the 8th District. Included in that 57 is the Miss School for the Blind (24 enrolled), so no sports are involved. Miss School for the Deaf (46 enrolled) is included, but MSD plays 7-man football and no one else in the state does, so they play out of state competition.
Currently that is enrollments of 24-211.

All schools do not participate in all sports, however, all but MSB participate in basketball.

In NJ we have four groups (I-IV), no idea what the cutoffs are though.

In Missouri, they have 1A-4A, with 1A being the smallest and 4A the largest school population. Not sure about the school population classifications, but my kid plays in a 3A with almost 1,200 kids in the High School. All conference games are 3A, but most of their non-conference games are against 4A teams.

Kenyucky, no classification.

Arizona-1A up to 200 students. 2A 201-449. 3A- 450-949. 4A 950-1899. 5A 1900 and up. Some of the 5A schools in the Mesa area have over 3000 students in just three grades.

on the amount of students in the school,with the
5a schools being the largest.The UIL meets every

I thought Kentucky has an 1A up to 4A classification? Am I wrong about this?

They do have a basketball and baseball tournament called the "All A" that only includes schools in the 1A classification.

5A (the largest)

North Carolina has 4 classifications. Currently the enrollments at schools run like this:

2A - 685 to 1032
3A - 1038 to 1377
4A - 1385 to 2664
