West Springfield 3 Western Branch 2 (State semi-final game, June 10, 2010)
Please excuse the late filing of this last report of the 2010 high school baseball season. By the time Western Branch had returned to Chesapeake late last Friday night, which seems like years ago, Rollapair had already filed an accurate report of the game (though not as detailed or wordy as mine.) It did not seem necessary to report. But it has felt like something was left hanging, that the season was not complete, without filing this final report.
Western Branch was the visitor, as it had been in all but one of its post-season games. Charlie Morgan was on the mound for West Springfield. For the first three innings, West Springfield held Western Branch scoreless, although Shane Johnsonbaugh and C.J. McAndrews reached on a singles in the 2nd and 3rd innings respectively. West Springfield also failed to score in those first three innings but not without putting pressure on Western Branch. West Springfield batters went in order the 1st inning but managed to load the bases in the 2nd inning. Kyle Snyder led off the 2nd inning with a ground rule double, the next batter lined out to the pitcher, Garrett Wadell walked and Trevor Snook singled to load the bases. Johnsonbaugh, WB’s starting pitcher, struck out the 5th batter of the inning and the 6th batter flew out to center field to end the threat. Charlie Morgan (WS) reached on a single in the 3rd inning, but WS again failed to score. End of 3, WB 0, WS 0.
In the 4th inning, and without a runner on base in front of him, Doggett was swinging away, instead of bunting; he showed what he could do. Doggett led off the inning with a double down the third base line. Nick Thompson was issued the intentional walk and Johnsonbaugh walked to load the bases with no outs. The next batter hit into a 1-2-3 double play. Kenny Cassidy then reached as a hit batter and Alex Hunt, with 2 outs, plated Thompson when he reached on an error. Morgan struck out the next batter to end the inning. Snook (WS) reached on a single in the 4th but failed to score. End of 4, Western Branch 1, West Springfield 0.
In the 5th, with 2 outs and no one on, Doggett again doubled and Thompson again was issued the intentional walk but they were left on base. The 5th inning, though, was West Springfield’s inning. Nick Stevens led off the inning with a walk, followed by Aaron Self’s single. Both reached home when Morgan, the third batter of the inning, parked the ball over the right field fence. Western Branch’s defense then stepped up to end the scoring. Bobby Wahl singled but was out on a 8-4-6 play when he tried to stretch it to a double. Snyder then walked. With 1 out, Daniel Allen hit a line drive to center field. Garrett Brooks, who had patrolled center field all season for WB, dove for the catch and second out. But Brooks was not satisfied with a good catch. He then fired the ball to first base to double off the runner who had gone halfway. A little unusual to see the center fielder, after making a diving catch, throw out the runner retreating to first! End of 5, West Springfield 3, Western Branch 1.
WB went in order in the 6th. Richard Eisenhower, who had the win in relief against Menchville, took the mound for WB. With one out, Snook (WS) reached on a single and advanced to second on Vassey’s ground out. He made it no further though, as Eisenhower picked him off second base to end the inning.
Now to the top of the 7th, WB’s last chance. With 2 outs, Brooks reached on an error. Again, because of the situation, Doggett was not bunting but was swinging away. He singled. (It would have been his third double of the game except he slipped rounding first base.) With first base occupied, Thompson was not issued the intentional walk but instead singled off the center field wall, advancing Doggett, the potential tying run, to third. Thompson, the potential go-ahead run, took second without any attempt by WS to stop him. West Springfield then decided it had allowed Western Branch enough fun - Wahl was brought in to strike out the last batter of the inning to secure the win for West Springfield.
Great seasons for both Western Branch and West Springfield, which won the state championship the following day by handing Woodbridge its only defeat of the season in a 10-2 game.
