State Teams In!

It doesn't matter how you mix the Central and Northern Regions. Both of those games should be outstanding.

The big prize that remains for the Central teams is a potential home game... one will avoid a trip to NOVA one will stay home

Absolutely right hsbasballfan. AAA Championship dates and locations (below). I noticed all times were 7pm for the next State round. Not sure if all these teams have lights.

i think they make exceptions or did in the past - Cosby hosted Glouchester on their lightless field in 2010.

I think they are now requiring you to play at another location if you cannot provide lights on your home field. The 2008 Western Albemarle-James River game resulted in a lot of complaints.

that's 6 teams - who are we missing out of the Eastern Region?

Eastern Region was rained out yesterday. Winners from today's matchups between Menchville vs. Nansemond River at 6PM and Kellam vs. Great Bridge to follow at 8PM.

From a another thread, it looks like it is Nansemond River and Kellam at ODU tomorrow.

I think you'll see a 2:00pm-2:30pm game at Cosby on Tuesday.

James River hosted Halifax in the quarterfinals last year, without lights, at around 4pm, if I remember correctly.

Not exactly easy on Cosby parents or fans either with that start time. However, you make it work at this point. Cosby earned a home gain. My guess is the early start time is insurance for rain delays, extra innings, etc.

the real unfairness is eastern and Central teams traveling to Fairfax for State Finals every year....why cant it be held in a central location?

Every year? Come on. I believe this is now only the 5th season the finals have been at Westfield.

Prior to that, for years the finals were in the Richmond area and also in Newport News, Williamsburg, and Norfolk. Was that any "fair" to the Northern Virginia teams that had to compete those seasons??

I don't have a problem with it switching to different venue's around the state. But change it up every year. That way somebody who has a kid playing on a perennial Final 4 team doesn't get saddled with traveling to the same spot for 3 or 4 years.

I just say Richmond because that is central to Eastern and Northern Region.

If it has to be in NOVA is Westfield the best field they have to offer up there? All grass infield...including base paths?

Oakton and PVI have the same setup. Not uncommon up here. Westfield has an excellent facility: field is wonderful, high fences, lots of stands, plenty of parking (even with the multiple sports being played at the Jubilee).

I agree, what fun is coming to Westfield for a Northern VA team. BIG deal, We played one year at CNU, that was a good weekend. VHSL has gotten cheap and now allows Westfield to host it all. Nice field but fence is 330' all around and no room behind home plate. Should rotate fields around the state.

C'mon, make the most of the trip. Nothing happening in Chantilly, so take the 10 minute drive and hang out at the Reston Town Center, and people-watch while having adult beverages. Metro into DC is easy from Vienna, and fairly quick. And Mets are at Nats Park that Wednesday and Thursday.

After travelling all throughout the Commonwealth every weekend for travel ball for lord knows how many years, it's nice for us northerners to sleep in our own beds.

Cosby website says 3:00pm on Tuesday at Cosby HS.

i just dont think the field should change the game the kids have played all year...grass base paths, 330 foot fence, and little league distance from home plate to back stop....all unusual and different from what everyone is used to. Gotta be better fields in NOVA.

Hanover would make a great state championship venue. The field is nice, the parking is ample, and given its proximity to 95 and 295 it's about as convenient to 95% of the AAA population base as you could hope for.

I agree. Change the venue every year makes the most sense, and offers the fairest solution.

MidloDad had a great point on another thread about playing on high school fields for high school players. I've been very pro "Richmond Diamond" but he got me thinking (oh no, not that!) that maybe high schoolers playing on college or minor league fields may not be the best thing for the high school baseball game.

Good Points Midlo Dad. I think Hanover is one of the Nicest if not the nicest field in the Central Region. Proximity to 95/295 is good. Parking is good. Good dimensions. Only issue is seating. They have limited seating and would have to find a way to increase that to make it a viable venue.

There's a lot of room there to bring in temporary stands. You could certainly accommodate as many fans as Westfield.

The location advantage for Hanover is similar to what we had at Randolph-Macon. The two main differences are the availability of an indoor plumbing/concession stand facility, and the fact that the distances are HS distances (though at the long end of HS fences).

BTW parking wouldn't be nearly as much a problem if the VHSL would give up the whole "jamboree" idea and maybe let different regions host different sports finales in the same year. Maybe the answer is to rotate the sports from year to year so that one sport is always in one region every year.
