We've had some troubles recently getting picked off by left-handed pitchers. Usually it's because the runner thinks that the pitcher is going to the plate, but instead throws to first and catches the runner "leaning". At what point, or what clues should the runner realize the lefty is committed to pitching to the batter?

There are a ton of cues but to be honest with you it is really tough for kids to concentrate on all of the possibilities in game situations. We make it simple and it works for us. By rule the lhp must step no further than at a 45degree angle when throwing over to first. The balk is rarely called. We do it like this. Do not get your secondary lead untill you see the lhp lead foot go towards home (period). You will never get picked if you follow this rule. Now you will get a late secondary lead but it really doesnt hurt you and no where near as much as getting picked. When you are going to steal go on first movement. As soon as lhp lifts his lead foot go. The bottom line is the pitcher has made up his mind before he lifts the front foot wether or not he is going to throw over to first. Good Luck
