Stealing Bases?

It is not so much the speed but the ability to read the pitcher and get a good jump

Yes I realize that,

I was watching some HS games and it took about 3.9-4 seconds from the pitcher to start moving in their delivery to the ball getting to second by the catcher.

Ofcourse the jump will make a difference as well as that catcher is not going to always be perfect with his throws.

I'm just kind of wondering the time it takes a fast runner to steal 2nd.

Based on what I read on the baseballfit.com link via this BB, "you need to be at or below 3.2 seconds. (Major league level). Yes, Homerun24 the same site show Rickey at 3.0 - 3.1 sec. That's fast!

Keep a stopwatch on some MLB pitchers from 1st movement to the pop of the mitt. Assume the C throws a 1.9. That will tell you how fast you need to be.

I remember reading an article about Lou Brock and how he stole so many (early 70's) bases.

He said he didn't know how fast he was, he tried to get a good jump, then it was just thirteen step and a slide to 2nd!

I tried it, and I couldn't do 13 steps but I could do 15 instead.

I liked this method becase no one put a clock on me (I was not fast).

kenny lofton in his prime would steal a base as fast as 2.8 seconds
