What is banned:

Forty-five types of steroids and human growth hormone (HGH).

The testing:

Each player will be tested at least once on a random basis between 33 days before opening day and the last day of the regular season.

It's possible a player could be tested two or more times. Names are drawn randomly for testing, so some players could be tested multiple times before every player has been tested once.

There will be testing during the offseason for the first time, but details have not yet been worked out.

What to expect:

The testing is incomplete and the penalties are weak right now. Since congress is involved, expect MLB and the Players Union to have to adopt a testing policy with some real teeth in it within a year or two.

Other notes:
Many school systems around the nation have adopted drug testing policies. Expect these to become more wide-spread. Expect the testing in college to increase dramatically over the next couple of years with serious penalties.

Advice:

Don't try to "beat the system". Hard work is what you need.

IMHO, testing results should differentiate between the player who is shooting up steroids and the player who drinks a protein shake from GNC, if they are going to be made public.

I am sure that the testing results do differentiate that very basic thing. If they didn't, the results would have been challenged in court by the Players Union within minutes. I believe you have made an invalid assumption. If they tested positive, odds are it's a true positive.

Also, someone needs to hold these suppliment companies accountable for label misrepresentation, if that is the case.

Since many of these suppliments are sold as dietary suppliments, they aren't subject to drug laws. You will also find that many of the big "name brand" items are actually manufactured in foreign countries that are untouchable as far as US law.

Let the buyer beware ..... It's his/her ultimate responsibility for what they ingest.
In college, players are given a list of things that are acceptable or non acceptable to take.
Players have to declare what they use, eg., protein shakes, prescribed medications and confirmed by the team doctor. I don't think in testing these things are going to send you to the bench for suspension. If so, everyone would be sitting.
They are looking for illegal substances.
agree TPM.
just checked with a parent & his kids advisor, who assured me that teams give the info, including a list of ingredients to avoid, to players. Some ingredients change to banned substances in the system, & thus are included on the list.
If someone doesn't read the label to find out what's in it, then, as H3 said "buyer beware!".
Best not to be gullible or naive...Salesmen are just that...salesmen. Considering the proliferation of new substances, perhaps the list may need to be updated even more frequently...

IMO, the players' agent would be his "the voice and representation". And the responsibility of choice still lies with the player.

Perhaps bbscout &/or one of the agents who post here could offer more insight on this issue.
