Not interested in everyone's opinions about the good or bad about steriods in professional baseball. Read enough. Seen enough.

Has anyone seen a published study that supports the proposition that steroid use helps your eye-hand coordination; and, therefore, helps you hit a baseball?

I've played baseball as a "hamburger" in the minor leagues; have a son that went to Mississippi State and into professional baseball; have a younger son that has aspirations for pro ball down the road.

Not doubting that taking steroids can help you get bigger and more muscular.

I just want to know how/or if it (taking steroids) enhances your eye-hand coordination and how that translates into success as a professional hitter.

Anyone?

Ram...Read the report...

Both steroids and the creatine section talk about "no scientific data"...re performance.

That was my question: Does anyone know of any proof, specifically for baseball, that steroids or creatine enhance your performance, i.e., specifically improving your eye-hand coordination which helps you hit a baseball?
Recently saw an interview with a doctor deeply involved with the steroid situation---he stated the biggest problem is that there are no "true scientific" studies on the use of steroids because nobody has actually come out and admitted to using it as well submitting to being studied. The medical profession does not know all the facts on steroids anabolic or otherwise.

A lot had been said about Lyle Alzado dying because of steroid use with the end result being the brain tumor that killed him-- many doctors say that there is no definite link between the steroids and his death.

When you think about it the medical profession does not even know all the facts about the drugs they prescribe so why would they be "up" on steroids

Also saw a show on weightlifters where men who have been using steriods for upwards of 20 years stated that they have had no side effects. And to be honest with they impressed me with the physical shape they were in.

As far as I can see is that steroids #1 aspect is the healing factor and then the body buildup. Weightlifters use such as to be able to rebound and recover from a work out.

I do believe that if you research McGuire's career the only year he played a complete season without injury was the year he broke the record and he was on "andro" that year--andro was legal at that time--the healing process

The way I see it it is all supposition as to the good and bad physical long term results--nobody knows enough to truly state what is the bottom line

As for eye hand coordination that is totally grey area--that is a gift that you are born with--some have it a better degree than others but does steroid use help--who knows ?
Having coached athetes full time professionally for a couple decades...watched opposing players go on the juice and off...am not a scientist...here are some VERY unscientific personal observations...

- Hand eye co-ordination can be significantly improved with specific attention to it, but only to the point of genetic maximum.

- Agree with bighit on this one....Stregnth will definately help with hand-eye, particularly in circumstances where a heavy object (bat) has to be be put into violent/rapid motion in an increasingly small time frame. But Stregnth is only a component and definately not the most critical one. Co-ordination is. But if I have to choose one, give me a hitter with co-ordination over one with simple stregnth any day. Stregnth is an edge not a cause of successful hitters.

- That being said, stregnth in the amounts that are often created by steroids do not necessarily help swings unless they are toned down through stretching.

- Steroids do not necessarily prevent injuries. The bigger unnatural muscles can and do break down tendons, bones....

- Steroids can often create systemic imbalances that hurt a hitters cognitive ability to solve the problems presented at the plate.

Just my personal observations....
