Story about Phil Rizzuto

My wife told me that when Phil Rizzuto showed up at a major league try-out, Casey Stengel told him to "Go home", because he was too small (at 5'6") to ever make it as a big league ball player.

Anyone else heard this story? I've known my wife to be one to confuse the facts at times, in spite of her vehement claim of having an extraordinary memory.

It is true, but a few more facts about it. The tryout was for the Brooklyn Dodgers, it was Rizzuto's dream to be a Dodger, and Stengel told him not only to "go home" but to "get a shoeshine box" as well.

Phil went on to win 7 Championships with the Yanks.
