We had a game yesterday,I was the starting catcher.

Im batting,Counts 2-2.Runners on 2b.A pitch starts over the plate but breaks in and hits me in the back of my right arm(I am a righty).I Immediately make sure to Hold up and I know for a fact I did.The front part of my body went forward with momentum but my right arm, which was holding my bat,I made sure stayed back, and it did.The Umpire calls me out saying I didnt check my swing and I went simply because he saw the front of my body go.I know my bat stayed back, not a doubt in my mind

Is there some rule or is this just a blown call?
Thanks

Appears the umpire called the batter out based on a swing and not because the ball hit him while his arm was in the strike zone.

If that was the case, then it would be a foul ball because it hit him as well. So he shouldn't have been called out just because he swung in that situation since the ball also hit the batter. Then it becomes a foul ball and a dead ball, right?
Bulldog 19,

It is not a foul ball if a pitch hits the batter (either in or out of the strike zone). It would only be a foul ball if it hit the bat before hitting the player.

futurecatcher27,

I wasn't indicating that you actually did swing at the pitch. Only that the umpire judged that you did. Did he call a swing or did he call the strike for some other reason?
If the ball hits the batter and the batter swings at said pitch, then it is a foul ball as well as a dead ball.

I truly wish I had a rule book so I could show you where, specifically where this comes from.

Didn't a similar question come up recently about bunt attempts and the ball hitting a batter? I'll look b/c this seems to be fairly similar to that.
For any ball to be declared foul it must first come in contact with the bat.

NFHS Rule 2 Section 16 Foul, Foul Tip
Art. 1...A foul is a BATTED BALL: (my emphasis)
a. through e. go on to describe the circumstances under which the ball is declared foul but first and foremost it is a batted ball.

If the batter swings and misses the pitch and the ball then hits him the ball is dead because it hit the batter and a strike is recorded because he did swing at it. It is not, however, a foul ball.

it sounds like you disagree with the umpire's judgement about whether you swung or not. Unfortunately for you, regardless of how sure you are that you checked your swing it is the umpire's judgement that matters. He judged that you offered at the pitch, and there is no further discussion necessary, it will be a strike and a dead ball (by rule). Judgement aside, it sounds like he got it right, ruleswise.
