Getting ready to leave for Omaha. Coach says we need to bubble wrap the baseball bats. Anyone know anything about this? Says something about the pressure in the plane can damage the bats? Just curious. Also, anyone ever have trouble with airline losing equipment? We're real nervous about losing the bat bag with several hundred dollars worth of equipment inside. Yikes!

Pressure I beleive would only affect it if it were a pressurized bat. It could cause the cap to pop off, too little pressure outside and the pressure inside would push the cap out maybe, but bubble wrap will not do anything for air pressure, it's not sealed. Better yet, just keep it in your carry on if possible. It may be considered a leathal weapon these days, but it's worth a try.
College teams travel all the time via air and put their bats in the luggage compartment. I am not aware of any suffering from the pressure. And I am pretty sure they don't use bubble wrap everytime they travel via plane.

I wouldn't try to carry a bat on the plane ... especially an aluminum one. Hubby works for FAA and I am pretty sure a bat, much like a golf club, would not be allowed. Heck, I don't even think the players can take their metal cleats in the carry on luggage anymore.

There is always a risk with lost luggage, but with all the traveling our son has done over the past 12 years, there was never one instance of equipment being lost or delayed.

Enjoy the tournament. It should be an interesting week-end with the CWS at the same time ... where will you stay?
3:00am and son is bouncing around like its Christmas. Very excited. We will be staying at the Doubletree downtown and at all the festivities tomorrow. The schedule allows for us to see several games and I believe the game we get to see is the Fullerton/UNC game which we are very excited to cheer for our one of our Cal teams. Yes we will be busy and it will be hard for our guys to think about their games when they are thinking about the big boys, but I guess that is why they came. We will see what they are made out of Cool
BBFam,

Best Of Luck To Your Son!

1. Due to the world we live in nowadays, you will not be able to take a baseball bat with your carry on luggage.

2. Bubble wrap is a very good idea. Not for pressure concerns, but because you never know how your bags will be handled. With an investment of $150 to $300 per bat, its worth a buck or two of bubble wrap to protect it when "Fred the baggage handler" decides its time to see if he can break his own luggage toss world record.
I agree with every response

- Bubble wrap is for external/cosmetic protection only
- Bat as a carry on is probably not going to happen [I'm an FAA employee myself]
- Definitely carry-on the glove, think about carrying on pants, jersey, socks, and jock for the first day
- Have taken metal spikes on board in the past - no problem, but never hurts to call ahead.

GOOD LUCK!!
BBFan,

Some flight stories/info:
Last year we went to PG Sunshine East. Flew United/Mesa. They lost our bat bag....it never left Dulles airport. Got it back when we returned home. Had to buy all new stuff in FL (pants, spikes, bat,). They only thing my son brought on board was glove (thank goodness).
Lesson learned....all uniform/equipment stuff is carried on, EXCEPT bats.

BATS-Have not experienced any problems with Aluminum bats in cargo hold. You are right.....bats are not allowed as carry-ons.

Cleats....just went to Sunshine East this last weekend. Son carried on cleats....no problems.....GOOD LUCK!!!
We are also heading to Omaha next week - and appreciate the advice. I wasn't sure about the spikes - but was VERY sure about the gloves - don't ever lose sight of your glove Smile

Checking bats, bubble wrap is a good idea but for something a little more solid I bought a sleeve for the bat (I think it is called an iron glove). At $300+ for a bat these days, I don't want a dent from the airline...
