Huge congratulations to Coach Jeff Smoot and Strasburg on clinching the Bull Run District's regular season crown last night. Strasburg regularly wins the district and goes deep into the playoffs, but this year there were 5 players dismissed from the squad 3 games into the season for violation of team rules (one strike and off the team for possession or use of alcohol). The five players dismissed included 3 starters and all 5 were big contributors.

Coach Smoot pulled up 3 JV players and proceeded to keep on rolling. He's the only baseball coach the school has ever had since the inception of the program in the late 1970's, and has had only 1 losing season ever. He coaches/preaches good old fashioned fundamental baseball, everyone doing their job the right way all the time, and simply is successful, year in and year out. He abhors the limelight but is truly one of the best baseball coaches in the state, at any level.

Strasburg's incredible run continues- they won their district tournament, won the quarterfinal over Page County and last night defeated Chatham 13-7, to advance to the Region B finals, and secured a berth in the state tournament.

Despite their relatively young roster, Strasburg has slugged over 20 home runs as a team this year.

As is the norm, Coach Smoot refused to allow himself to be considered for District Coach of the Year, which is a shame because it's unlikely any coach at any level has overcome more to succeed this season. According to the VHSL newsletter, he's on the brink of entering the top five on the wins by active coaches list.

Yes Virginia, there is baseball at Single A schools. Strasburg's next game is at Goochland Friday, where some kid named Verlander (from a Single A school not at the Beach!) has enjoyed pretty good professional success. Both will advance to play in the State quarterfinals next week.
Hopefully this storybook thing has a good ending this season. Strasburg defeated Essex last night, 4-2, to advance to the semifinals in front of an estimated crowd of 700 at Strasburg. Next up is a 2:00 Friday semi-final at Radford University.

This team early season, after booting 5 players, was truly felt to be in a position where they'd struggle to play .500 baseball, at best. They're now 21-5. In all my years of watching baseball, I've never quite seen anything like this.
Last post on this to close out the story:

The bus carrying the Rams home was met at the Woodstock exit by fans/supporters, came through Toms Brook where even more folks lined the road cheering, and arrived in Strasburg around 9:00 p.m. to be greeted by approximately 750 or more purple souls, all cheering loudly, car horns honking, etc. Quite a day, quite a season. These guys won't forget this one.
