Can anybody point me to a website that shows stretching exercises for the back?

We have a pitcher on our varsity team that will have to miss most of the season because of a back injury.

I don't want that to happen to my son, who as a freshman, will be pitching for the JV squad.

Any tips or pointers will be appreciated!

Thanx, Garry

The back is often overlooked in pitchers because the arm gets all the attention!
Last spring my son let us know that his back felt "tight" on one side. We took him to a sports rehab physical therapist since he was heading off to Area Codes in 4 weeks. Happily, there was no injury. The PT consulted with a team of other PT's and they came up with a VERY BORING set of stretches for my son. One even involved laying on a noodle (like you float on in the pool) and rotating his arms back and forth. Within 3 sessions, no more tightness. Now he has the knowledge to prevent this problem. Its just a matter of getting him to do it preventatively. You know how it is, he's 10 feet tall and bullet proof!
I wish I could explain the exercises to you, but they're really weird. Get to a professional if you really need them.
BTW, insurance covered 20 visits per year to a PT if the family doctor approved it. Very helpful.

Thanx, KC, for the quick response.

Garry, also have your son do actual back excersizes to strengthen it. Pull downs and seated rows are great for the back. You might want to ask him if his school makes him do that for conditioning (if he is in conditioning) because if they don't it could hurt him in the long run. I have a few band excersizes that help your back, shoulder, and rotator cuff..I'll try to find'm online and get back to you.

Thanx, TP.

He is into his 4th game of high school winter ball right now. They only play on Saturdays and Sundays and no coaches of record can be in the dugout.

All of the baseball players have been in a conditioning program since tryouts ended on Dec. 5th. I know they do general stretching exercises every day.

He does play 1st base and the outfield when he doesn't pitch since he is a lefty.

I don't know if the coaches have the pitchers on a particular stretching program seperate from the other players. Hopefully, you can post a link or two after you do some more research.

Again, thanx for your help in this matter!!

I'm tellin you as a freshman myself using these excersises has made such a difference. This off season I worked out hard and did those band excersises and gained velocity big time. Please have him do it, you won't regret it.

TP, I clicked on the link and found it to be very interesting. Looks like a good workout for my son. Will invest in the bands!

If you or anybody else can supply any more links to any specific back exercizes for pitchers, it would be greatly appreceited!!
