Can anyone tell me the rule on any pitch being called a strike if the batter is not in the batters box? We had a game yesterday end with both base coaches almost getting thrown out because the pitch bounced and he called it strike 3 (Not the first call he hadn't seemed to get right)(a tag at the plate that I think he no way around it, blew, and another bounced strike three) this is 10-11-12 year olds, and there was no way that you could tell where the outside line of the batters box because the field wasn't lined between games. Can anyone help me out here? I feel like the ump shouldn't be making a call like that if no one can see where the edge of the box is.

There just really isnt enough information in your post to help you out...other than the fact you think the umpire made some bad calls...

What rule code does this league operate under?

Did the umpire call the strike becuase the batter was not in the box?

What is the level of Umpiring? (volunteers/teenagers/coachs/parents/certifed umpires)

we may be able to get you close to an answer...
More info.

If batter stepped out during the pitch or wind-up before the pitch and then the pitch was delivered then it can only be called a strike if it was in the strike zone. A batter who steps out of the box during the pitch has become illegal and can't hit it into fair play from that position. Nevertheless, it still must be in the strike zone to be called a strike if he doesn't swing.
Hey lumber jack,

Who made more errors the umpire or the players? The level of umpire ability is usually commensurate with the ability of the players.

If this is your first kid in baseball you are probably thinking what a big deal it is at the high level you are at Wink . I know I did. 2 years from now you will realize how ridiculous your expectations were.

Gingerbread....

That would only correct in OBR and NCAA ...if under FED rules, then that would be wrong....Since this is a HS site, I want to make sure we quote the NFHS rule version first...

In FED, if a batter steps out without being granted time and the pitcher legally delivers, the umpire shall call the pitch a strike no matter the location of the pitch and the ball remains alive....

I do not expect a 10-12 year old league to use NFHS rules...yet it is why I asked the OP for the applicable rules code....
