This is just an observation. Both home plate and field ump can make mistakes and miss calls. Yes, they'll catch grief from coaches and fans, but the key to how much craziness ensues is a result of the strike zone.

If home plate is inconsistent in his calls, it a boiling pot of water. When field ump has a bang bang on the base paths, or home plate has a tight call on a foul ball over the bag, the pot will boil over and then all that anger that was bubbling due to the strike zone will spill out.

Home plate can have a lousy strike zone as long as it consistent. Pitchers and hitters will adjust and the coaches and fans will accept it. But if no one knows what a strike is from pitch to pitch, you can guarantee that there's going to be a blow up.
