wavehog- it depends. On my team(s), there usually isn't a laptop but there's usually a hotel computer. For the most part I find that I don't usually type the work up. I'll go to my teachers prior to the trip and get the work I will be missing and explain to them that the legibility might not be the greatest and it could be difficult to type it but it will be done. Usually the work is done like on the plane or once you get back from dinner or something. Any kid of down time is usually spent working.
Son was required to come as a freshman with laptop. He is always connected to the university network and is able to access any information and contact professors. You would have to see if this is a requirement.

The nice part about college is that most students are given timelines and know in advance when papers are due as well as tests.

With that knowledge, son prefers to get work done before he hits the road. There is a lot of down time, he prefers catchng up on ZZZZ, video games and movies (viewed on that laptop Big Grin).
