Home team is winning 1-0 going into the top of 7. Away team pinch hits for starting shortstop, pinch hitter gets a base hit, now on 1st. Pinch hitter gets pinch ran for...away team ends the inning (top of 7) now ahead 2-1. Bottom of 7 away team re-enters starting shortstop? This is an illegal substitution correct? Tis is brought up to the umpire who stated all good play ball. So let's start with is this an illegal substitution? If so what can be done regarding formal protest? Thank you

Let me pose this...runner entered the game for the hitter...so with that re-enter is only allowed by the hitter re-entering for the runner.
So with that move you take out your shortstop. Agree that the shortstop could have re-entered for the pinch hitter if the pinch hitter was not substituted for. I hope that makes sence
The starter is allowed to re-enter one time. No sub is allowed to re-enter.

My understanding of the rule is you could sub 15 guys in the same position, but as long as none of them were the starter, the starter could still re-enter at the end of the string.

So if A is the starter, he's subbed for B, who is subbed for C, who is subbed for D, only A would be allowed to re-enter the game for D. B is out for good when C comes in, C is out for good when D comes in.

Others here are smarter than I and can provide better answer.

I also understand that subs in SOFTBALL can re-enter, but not in baseball (FED rules).

The FED guys will hopefully be along, cause there may be some pinchrunner (courtesy) type stuff also.

Nothing that changes the fact that any starter can reenter.

Good one is that you could have 2 starters reenter in the same spot. DH for player A. Let player A run or hit for the DH, killing the DH (position). former DH can reenter for player A later. Player A is now out of the game, but can still reenter for the former DH.

Sounds complicated, but if you just follow the simple logic that any starter can reenter 1 time, you're good!!
