Hello. I am a former college player and varsity high school head and assistant coach. A job change a couple of years ago forced me out of coaching for the time being, but I have remained close to the game.

Over the past 2-3 years I have devoted my time to the catching position. I have attending numerous clinics, watched many videos, and read many books on the position.

I am now looking to begin private catching instruction from my house and had a few questions. Does anyone have suggestions on the following:

1. How to promote or spread the word about what I am doing?

2. Do I need any sort of business license, etc.?

3. Any other helpul advice?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can offer insight or suggestions.

We started giving lessons last year. Some things to think about:

  • Get a good "Hold Harmless Agreement" This might not be totally binding in court because you can't cover negligence but then again, I feel better prepared for court.
  • Several states hold Certificate Training Courses. If your teaching certificate isn't up to date, you might want to attend one of these. I had one of my former players attend and get his certificate. Again, this is for legal issues and really to make sure that he was better prepared for emergencies etc.
  • Make sure that you do a safety inspection of where you are going to give lessons! One example that comes to mind, we did and yet, one kid ventued into the hitting area of another player. He almost has his head cut off. Therefore, we took yellow tape and marked the floor just as you would see in a factory. Again, legally this is a good idea.
  • When the players start lesson, go over a saftey talk and have them AND THEIR PARENTS SIGN. The place where we take our girl take pitching lessons does this and it is really a good idea.
  • Pat Perry, former pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals is giving lessons to our high school players. Prior to doing so, Pat called me and offered to take me out to lunch. THAT WAS A NICE JESTURE! He and I think abslolutely the same with regards to pitching technique etc. and so, I send my high school kids to him. As you all know, I can't give lessons to my high school players. Contact your high school coach and/or their travel coach to see where you stand philosopically.

Well, it sounds like I've included a lot about the law but I live in Madison, County Illinois. This is the #1 place to be sued in the U.S.A. (That is why President Bush came here to give a speech on malpractice limits.) It is better to be forwarned than to be caught with your pants down.
