I am interested in what your pitcher sons did for the summer before starting school. Did the college program influence that and at what point was it decided? And does it make a difference what level college ball they are going into?
D1s usually bring freshmen to campus to train and take some classes. Other levels mostly don't. Some D3 coaches will find your son a spot in a collegiate league, some won't. Your son has to ask his coach, now is the time.
For a pitcher, I would think that it would depend how much he pitches in his senior HS season. And, he doesn't want to show up for fall ball worn out.
He threw for Legion and a couple of tournaments for the fun of it in June. Early enrollment in July. Came home in July to pitch one game to get them in the playoffs for Legion.
Mostly rising freshmen pitchers went to summer school to get work and credits in at son's mid major D1. Son played Legion for the first time that summer and played with friends from different schools which was fun for him. Much more laid back than summer travel or high school ball for him. He was a MIF, but they put him on the mound one game. I like to say he gave up no hits! (The reality: they were all walks!)
