Today we had our right fielder going out to the field after hitting. He had his shades on top of his hat and the ump made him remove them. At the time the sun was behind some clouds but it could have popped out from behind.

He said when they were on the head it was considered jewelry. To me this is a nonfactor because if the sun did pop out from the clouds and is giving him trouble he could just take them off his head and put them on. But if he can't wear them out like then now we have to hold up the game while we run a pair out and he comes in to meet them. Then both return to where they came from.

Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude. Thomas Jefferson

I am constantly amazed at the umpires some of you find and tremendously thankful that I have never worked with any of them.

Exactly where do you find these guys? What part of the country are in? I swear, if you could tell me the association these guys belong to I'd fly out, stop in and b!tch slap one of them.

Oh, yeah...not jewelry.

And that to me is even more disheartening.......There is no remote reason or justification for calling sunglasses jewelry...nor is wearing them on the hat a factor....

Let us know I'll book a seat with Jimmy for the trip .....

There just cant be any leadership in any of these associations...
Thanks guys. To make matters even worse these guys showed up an hour late for the game. We were playing on a field that did not have lights and it has been that way for years. So everyone knew it was going to be an earlier than normal start time.

When they did show up they took their sweet time getting ready. It was pretty ridiculous.

If the umpires showed up late from the actual game start time, then I agree. But if they showed up per the scheduled time, not the "everybody knows it was going to be earlier", then the fault lies with the HC and AD.--just schedule the game earlier, dont rely on the Everybody Knows...

I have had this happen.....partner and I showed up at 1:30 for a 2:00 game....got dressed and walked to the field for 1:45 ground rules/ helmet and bat check......told by the coaches that the game had been rescheduled for 1:00.....no one notifed our assignor......

But we took the heat for being late....
Archangel I understand what you are saying but that isn't the case here. This school always plays their home games at 4:00 due to the fact they have no lights and have to get the game in before it gets too dark.

I don't know the reason why they were late but they were. Maybe there was a good reason and maybe I jumped the gun on criticizing them for that. The school had submitted the schedule on time and the game time had never changed.
wearing sunglasses is certainly not illegal - it is done in all levels of baseball - major leaguers wear them and unless there is a specific associational rule there is usually a fallback to major league rules.

And oh yeah - major leaguers wear jewelry too!

seems to me that there are some umpires (thankfully in the minority - most are very reasonable) that think the game is about them and not the players - oh well, lots of parents like that too!

Loose jewelry is a genuine safety issue. MLB players are deemed adult and smart enough to accept the consequences of their actions. HS students are not so deemed.

Over the many years, I've heard the phrase that there are umpires who think the game is about them. I've never met any such umpire. I've met incompetent umpires, ones who don't understand the rules, ones who do use proper mechanics and ones who just plain don't have the emtional make-up to be an umpire. But I've never, ever met an umpire who seriously thought the game was about him.

I find that remark to be insulting and incorrect at best and completely fabricated and disengenuous at worst.

There is no doubt that there are bad umpires, but it is unnecessary to attribute their mistakes to such conceit.

Hate to tell you how many times I have heard an ump tell a coach that " you are on my field"

It's a common phrase. It comes from OBR declaring the umpires as the official representatives of the Game of Baseball.

I hear it all levels. During the game, it's the umpire's field.

It has nothing to do with thinking the game is about them. It has everything to do with the rules giving them jurisdiction of the field during the game.

I hear the same during basketball at football.

What happened to playing baseball? We have dh 10 run rule re entry and jewelry rule? If sunglasses are jewelry I will consider them as a gift to my wife on our anniversary. when she asks I will say it was a tough choice either sunglasses or a diamond bracelet.
