I think it was just a between innings song to start. It's been a very popular karaoke bar song. Then in 2004 "good times never felt so good" and the song became a staple.
It beats 86 years of a line from another popular karaoke song ... "Why do you build me up, Buttercup baby, just to let me down ..." Talk about a lifelong Sox anthem until four years ago!
I've heard it at UCLA and Stanford. My youngest daughter is named Caroline and her older brother arranged for it to be played at UCLA on her birthday two years ago with a scoreboard birthday wish to boot. She was floating on cloud-9.
