Welcome to HSBBW!

My experience is that many young kids swing and hit the ball too early. At the HS level you constantly hear coaches yelling at kids to “let the ball get deeper”. One way to help teach kids to do this is to take an L screen and put it 10-15’ in front of the plate, slightly toward their opposite field side. (Right side for a Righty) Reverse the L (L in opposite side) get a bucket or seat to sit on and underhand toss balls to the outside part of the plate and have the player hit the balls to the opposite field only. By getting closer and throwing underhand you can control the ball better. Have them hit balls only to the opposite field and make sure the balls are in the back half of the plate. Now that I am typing this you can start this process with a T and then go to the soft toss.

I have a 9 year old son, that when he waits for the ball has a very nice swing and hits the ball with a lot of power. But, most of his swings are early, causing him to reach for the ball and his head to drop. I’m looking for tips on how to resolve this issue.

Thanks,

Without video of his swing, my best guess would be he is shifting his weight to his front foot. He needs to let the swing shift the weight.
