The only rules are:

1. The bat must have a safety grip extending 10 inches minimum to 18 inches maximum from the knob end.
2. The wrapping must not make the bat handle flush with the knob end
3. The grip must not be slippery "electrical type tape is not legal"

So then do you let them use the bat with the tape hanging off of it?
To me, much of successful umpiring is having faith in your own personal judgment....

In my opinion, if I noticed a loose tape grip that I felt would hinder his ability to safely hold onto the bat, I'd ask that the tape be repaired/modified or that he use another bat....

If there is no rule, I trust myself to make an informed reasonable judgment....

By how much? Half an inch? An inch? An inch and a half? Two inches? Ten inches?
My obvious question then is why would you ask them to cut off three inches of tape hanging down, but not ask them to secure a three inch flap on the batting glove?

Clearly three inches of tape is not going to present any type of a safety issue. But it's probably distracting and annoying to see it hanging down. Three inches is about how far this undone flap on the batting glove was hanging down.

My whole point about this is that I get umpires that say they would not have addressed this, and I'm fine with that. I also get those that think an umpire that makes a habit out of numerous things of this nature being an OOO. But I don't think it's fair to label me as an OOO or act like what I did was so outlandish.

Most of my defending myself on the other thread was not based on me thinking I made the BEST decision, but thinking I made an ACCEPTABLE decision.

Three inches? I'd ignore it.

BTW, I worked 18U select teams tonight and, since it was fresh in my mind, saw and counted no fewer than eight players who chose not to fasten their batting gloves.

No attention was paid to them by me in the first half of the DH or by parnter in the second game of the DH.

Wow that must either be a regional thing or recent thing. I don't ever recall noticing it before while doing games. And even the one case that I did notice it was only because the velcro was bad.

Obviously if it's that prevalent I'm not going to touch it.
huh
