Is it typical for summer league teams to charge their players a fee? If so, how much is usual?

Many teams are free but some do charge a fee.
My son played on two teams in the same league. One was free, the other charged $500. The one that charged was a brand new team. Probably had something to do with it.

Most leagues now charge a fee but not all do. It's a question now asked by college coaches all the time that wasn't asked as recently as 3 years ago so it seems the trend is for more and more leagues to charge.
Summer league teams aren't cheap to operate. In our league, the Valley League (a nonprofit non-alcohol league),most teams need around $40,000-$50,000, give or take $5,000, to operate, with it being about 10K more in years where new unis are needed. Most teams are right around break-even, year in and year out.
The Valley League charges no fees to players. This issue was raised last winter and the vote to remain fee-free was unanimous. I think it's fair to say that most leagues would prefer not to charge but economic reality dictates otherwise.

Going along with what hokieone has stated, I just received a letter from the GM of the PGCBL team my son is playing for this year, asking for a $400 "host family fee" for this summer. At $40 per week, I really can't complain, but I still like last years deal of $0 a lot better, when he played in the NECBL. 
I also do understand and I'm very thankful for the host family that will open their door and take my son in for the summer.

We just received the fe from my son's Great lakes league team. $500, I cannot complain it is cheaper than his travel teams in the past.
