In keeping with the upcoming football season I just thought this would be some good convo while we also talk about our beloved game of baseball.

I dont know how I feel about this. I wasn't a Tebow fan when he played for the Gators against my SEC team each season and I've never really been a Patriots fan. (Just a choice I made long ago because of their helmet design while growin up. it sucked! lol) But why would they pick him up from the Jets just to let him go later?

Is Tebow's days as a football player over? I like the  young man now. He's a fierce competitor and very likable as a young man. But no one can tell me that his young athletic built like a tank man can not play in the NFL! No way. I just wonder if he should give up the dream of playing QB and maybe try his talents at offense or defensive end. Heck, maybe even a LB. Or do you think we'll see on ESPN in the next 2 weeks that he's been picked up by another team? I just can't see being content playing football as a 2nd or 3rd string player. Time to give it up and pursue his others dreams and interests?

Your thoughts?

YGD,

I'm not surprised given his skill set and pre-season performance.   It is a huge business, and only 53 players per team.   I'm a Pats fan, and I gotta believe if the Pats couldn't squeeze any value out of him, nobody will.   Belichick is notorious for trying people in different and multiple roles.  I thought for sure they'd try him at TE given the grease-fire at that position.   Mallet is unproven as Brady's backup but he is competent and he's been in the sytem for a couple years.  I didn't see him having any chance at QB unless Mallet or Brady got hurt.  I think he's done as a player in the NFL.

I think there are a lot of positives with Tebow, and he'll find something that fits him.  I'm not a huge believer in sharing one's religious or political views publically, but it seems to work for him.  I wish him well.

For the same reason why a baseball team picks up a player who is designated for assignment from the 40. It's a business.

Heard an interesting comment on the radio the other day, word was out that Brady didn't care for him.  Tebow gets a lot of attention, perhaps that wasn't appreciated by the star QB.

I like TT,  he brings a lot of good to the game and for people. I am not a follower of his faith, but a fan.

Tim Tebow is a great person and he will be successful in life (his public display of his beliefs are open for debate but it doesn't take away from the fact he's a good person).  I wouldn't be surprised if he is picked up by someone in a couple of weeks once the season gets going.  Someone will get hurt and need a back up or someone to get through a stretch of games.

If he was smart he would start entertaining another position to stay in the NFL.  He's done a ton of work to fix some of the things that hurt him (check out video of his throwing form at Florida / Denver and last week with NE) but he's still not quite good enough.

Who knows maybe the Manziel's will hire Tebow to teach Johnny Football how to play with class.

You're joking, right? What talents? He's slow for a QB, so any other skill position is out. He's not that big, so non-skill positions are out.

Given Tebow's necessity to have a trick offense, and his propensity to be a temporary member of any team, it would not surprise me that Belichick never gave him the same playbook that the rest of the offense had, but a smaller menu of options that were designed for him alone.

That is the conventional thinking of most successful modern NFL organizations....which explains why the other team I follow (Redskins) decided to keep 4 quarterbacks.

So, the Redskins have RG3, Kirk Cousins, Rex Grossman and Pat White right now.  I hope Daniel Snyder isn't meddling again and doing his best Jerry Jones imitation.

matt13 what is slow? his 40 time was 4.7.  that's slow for a QB? I doubt it.In this years draft class he would have been 4th fastest 40 time. Look it up. Lets deal in facts not personal opinions which this young man seems to be judged on. And no, it was not a trick offense in Denver it was the same offense basically that Kap and RG3 are running. Read option..

Yes, let's deal in facts. 4.7 is slow for a QB, especially with the type of offense that's geared for him. And, yes, the read option is a trick offense. With him, you have to run it because he doesn't have the ability to make decisions in a normal offense. He's indecisive and can't read defenses.

Being a complete NFL quarterback demands one of the rarest and most complex skill sets in the sports world--it's right up there with MLB shortstop.  There's no shame in not being one of the perhaps two dozen people in the world who can do the job well.

Speed is only one of many factors (and 40 time measures only one of the several kinds of speed a QB needs), but it is not the reason Tebow hasn't found a steady NFL QB job.

When Tebow attended the combine, he ran a 4.71, which was fourth fastest among QB's that year.

The fastest QB 40 times at this year's combine:

1. Geno Smith, West Virginia Mountaineers—4.59 seconds

2. EJ Manuel, Florida State Seminoles—4.65 seconds

3. Matt Scott, Arizona Wildcats—4.69 seconds

4. MarQueis Gray, Minnesota Golden Gophers—4.73 seconds

T-5. Colby Cameron, Louisiana Tech Bulldogs—4.78 seconds

T-5. Collin Klein, Kansas State Wildcats—4.78 seconds

geno smith ran a4.6. a tick faster,do you consider him slow for a QB?  I believe only 7 QBs in NFL right now run a sub 4.6 40 time. and 2 of them are backups. Here are some more numbers Andrew Luck 4.67, Brees 4.83,Rodgers 4.71Brady5.28Peyton 4.8,Eli manning 4.92. So 4.7 is SLOW for a QB. Like I said I don't think so. Please, if you want to point out flaws or if you think he is not talented enough then argue that. Don't say things like he is to slow, as these times point out he is NOT to slow to play QB in the NFL. And as far as a gimmick offense goes, one of those teams that run the read was just in the super bowl. And remember the flex defense? Yea, that was a gimmick too, just led the Cowboys to the super bowl. All new things in sports are referred to as gimmicks when they are just innovations.Tell Mike Shannahan his offense is a gimmick. I think he will disagree, as well he should, he has two rings.

It is a reason. He doesn't have the ability to run a traditional offense, and he doesn't have the speed to run a wildcat or read option.

So many things here that are just wrong.

A. I've never referred to his offense as a gimmick.

B. Cowboys haven't been to the Super Bowl in nearly 20 years.

C. That's not Shanahan's offense. He's a West Coast coach. That was the offense he used to get those two rings. It's his son's, and there's a QB there that has the talent to run it.

D. He is too slow. He doesn't have the acceleration that a running QB needs.

Matt,

You've shifted your ground.

Your first post in this thread dismissed YoungGunDad's suggestion that Tebow could play another position by saying, "He's slow for a QB."

When Old Man Moses and I weighed in with his 40 time and how it compares to other QB's, you changed the subject to speed required to run particular offenses, what qualifies as a trick offense, and his ability to run traditional offenses, all of which are irrelevant to your original point, which was that he can't find another skill position because he is slow for a QB.

Three NFL teams have had him, and three NFL teams have got rid of him, so the question of whether he can play in the league seems settled, at least for now. I'm not arguing he should be in the league in any capacity.

I was responding only to the narrow question of whether "he's slow for a QB" was a fair summation of the reasons he can't find another skill position.  He may be too small to be a TE or too slow to be a WR or lack the skills and experience to play either, but "he's slow for a QB" wasn't a satisfactory explanation.

No, I didn't. I addressed additional points as they came up.
