I may have miscounted but I count at least 10 D1 programs in Tenn!

Can anyone with ample knowledge of most/all these porgrams rank them according to baseball program, Head coach, academics, campus/area..? I guess it make it easy just put a 1 - 10 beside each one with 10 being the highest score.

Austin Peay

Belmont

Lipscomb

East Tenn State

Memphis

Middle Tenn State

Tennessee

Tennessee Tech

UT - Martin

Vanderbilt

If I missed one, please be sure to add!

Thanks!

Middle Tennessee State University

I graduated from MTSU. We are big Blue Raider baseball fans and really enjoyed the games there. My senior year, I took "Coaching Youth Baseball" from Steve Peterson, the head coach. Love this guy! He has a great knowledge of the game and has been with MTSU for more than 20 years. Coach Pete is also a great teacher of the game. They made it to the CWS Regionals this year.

Coach - 10
Program - 9 (Renovated stadium and indoor baseball practice area with club house for the baseball team)
Area - 9 - Lived there for 10 years - great community, traffic is somewhat congested. Lots of restaurants, shopping and things to do without leaving "the 'Boro".
Campus - 10 - With over 25,000 students, MTSU is now the 2nd largest university in TN. Easy to access campus and there are shuttle buses for getting around on campus. Administration is very helpful and student-centered. Has handled the growth with grace and still maintains its family feel.
Academics - 9 - Nationally known Sports Training program - had a friend who went straight from graduation to be a trainer with the Houston Astros. Also, great programs in education, agriculture and Record Industry Management.

I would be thrilled if my son got the opportunity to play baseball here!

Hope that helps!

MTSU now has more undergraduate students than any university/college in Tennessee.

JMO:
Austin Peay: Ohio Valley Conference, above average program, academics are average, average facilities, D1 public school

Belmont: Atlantic Sun, good academics, average program, off campus facilities, D1 pirvate school

Lipscomb: Atlantic Sun, strong academics, good young coaching staff, above average program, good facilities, D1 private school

Memphis: Conference USA, average academics, average coaching staff, below average program, building new facilities, D1 public school

MTSU: Sunbelt Conference, average academics, stable coaching staff, good program, new facilities, D1 public school

Tennessee: Southeastern Conference, strong academics (mean ACT 26.5 & 3.50gpa), very unstable coaching staff with many rumors being floated around, below average program, building new facilities, D1 public school

Tennessee Tech: Ohio Valley Conference, strong academics, very good young head coach, good program, below average facilities, D1 public school

UT Martin: Ohio Valley Conference, average academics, below average coaching, below average team, below average facilities, D1 public school

Vanderbilt: Southeastern Conference, great academics, very strong coaching, good/strong team, above average facilities, D1 private school
cbg,
I question your knowledge of UT-Martin. I have been to every one of the venues in the Ohio Valley Conference and UT-Martin facilities are as good or better then every other school in the conference. New stands, lights and breaking ground on a new clubhouse in the next few weeks. Also the talent has improved each of the last two seasons, missing the OVC tourney by one game. Everyone is entitled to there own opinion on the coaching staff. All I will say is keep an eye on the Skyhawks this season as I will be very surprised if they don't make the OVC tournament and if that happens who knows what could happen.
My Son was recruited by a few of the TN schools mentioned. Here's what I can add about the TN programs:

Vanderbilt-Outstanding academics,always a strong baseball team, can't go wrong!

Austin Peay-decent conference, tough non-conference schedule, always competitive, average school and facilities, large non-traditional enrollment. Super Head Coach with strong values! One of the "good guys" in College Baseball.

Middle Tenn- very strong lately! Will probably be picked to win Sun Belt, which is gaining ground as a Mid-Major! http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/b...&prov=yhoo&type=lgns

UT-Martin-friend of ours is a Freshman on the team there. Facilities are apparently on the rise? Comfortable campus.

Belmont-play in a Minor League Park. Expensive, very artsy student population, fairly strong religious influence, from what I understand?
Coaches all seemed like very trustworthy and decent people!

Good Luck!
Remember, it's not always about "the program" in comparison to others...look more for the right fit for your player. There are many great programs and great coaches in the state that may not be right for a certain individual.

Coach A seemingly maybe a "better coach" that Coach B but Coach A's personality may not be a good fit for your son. Program A maybe be winning at a greater frequency than Program B but Program B offers more a realistic opportunity for playing time.

1) Be realistic in YOUR expectations. Most likely if a particular level of school is not ACTIVELY recruiting your son he cannot play at that level.

2) Does the player handle criticism? More need of a nurturing coach?

3) How important is immediate playing time? Evaluation of current roster and signees.

4) How important is your/his ego? Is the importance of playing at School X just for social status?

5) How self disciplined is your player? Need of a more structured environment?

6) Level of motivation/effort? Can he handle a demanding coach?

7) Academic ability? Setting an average student up for failure?

8) Social preparedness? Is he ready for 200 in his Comp I class?

The list could go on and on...
Coach,
Those are great questions every player/parent should ask before making a commitment to a school. My son's goal in signing with a JUCO is to get on the field sooner. He is not willing to wait just because he is a freshman and realizes there is more potential for improvement while actually playing the game rather than sitting in the dugout watching. We just pray that he made the right choice and it will work out for the best.
TR Hit,
I never meant to imply that I thought JUCO ball would be "easier" than D1 ball. Son is simply looking at numbers and has realized that he can better hold his own with other players who are 18-20 years old as opposed to men who may be up to 22 or 23 years old.
BTW, he is a position player and will only be competing with 2 others for playing time according to the HC.
Re Middle Tenn State University- son's west coast college team is here for opening week-end @ MTSU. Very nice stadium, great coaches, nice location. We have been impressed with how nice the fans are and how welcoming all the people of TN are. We are so glad to have played this week- end as compared to all the rain-outs on the west coast.

Thanks to all we've met in TN for their warm welcome. Good luck the rest of the season.
