The double elimination tournament will start saturday at Columbia State Community College.

Also this weekend Volunteer State swept second place Cleveland state three games to knock Cleveland down to third place for the season.

Pioneers sweep Cleveland State

Volunteer State Community College finished the home conference schedule in style this weekend.

The Pioneers got a big momentum boost by sweeping the conference’s second-place team, Cleveland State, on Saturday and Sunday.

Pitching was the name of the game, as VSCC allowed just five runs in three games.

Vol State (17-13, 32-16) came away with a 6-4 win and 3-0 win over Cleveland State on Saturday and then downed the visitors 4-1 on Sunday to complete the sweep.

The first game of Saturday’s doubleheader provided the most offense on either side.

Vol State cashed in on scoring opportunities in the first two innings and made it hold up for starter Chris Beatty.

Beatty wasn’t sharp, allowing four hits, six walks and four earned runs in 5 1/3 innings, but it was enough for the win. Dane Archer closed it out with 1 2/3 innings of two-hit, shutout relief.

Trailing 1-0, Vol State took the lead early, plating two in the bottom of the first. Garrett Harp walked with one out and moved to third on Joel Lynch’s single. Lynch moved up on the throw to third.

After a strikeout, Danny Pulley reached on an error to third, allowing both runners to score, making the tally 2-1.

The Pioneers then exploded for three in the bottom of the second to take a commanding lead.

With out out, Gallatin High product Matt Robison was hit by a pitch to begin the rally. After a strikeout, Ahmir Watkins singled and Harp then ripped a two-run double.

Harp came plateward on Lynch’s RBI single, making the score 5-1.

Cleveland State (19-12, 36-18) scored twice in the fourth to trim the margin to two, but Vol State added an insurance run in the bottom of the frame on Pulley’s RBI fielder’s choice.

The Pioneers were able to plate six runs on just four hits, thanks to four Cleveland State errors and two walks.

Scotty Rogowski dominated on the hill in the day’s second contest.

Rogowski hurled a complete game, allowing no runs, just four hits and only one walk. He struck out six.

Vol State provided all the offense he would need with a two-run first inning.

Watkins doubled to lead it off. After a groundout, Lynch came through with an RBI-single. Michael Richardson was hit by a pitch and Pulley singled to load the bases.

Heath Puryear followed with a sacrifice fly to put the hosts ahead 2-0.

The score remained that until the bottom of the fourth when Pulley led off with a single, moved to second on a groundout, went to third on Lynch’s single and scored on Blake Bratcher’s fielder’s choice.

Rogowski improved to 5-5 with the win. Lynch, Pulley and Justin Humphrey all had two hits for the Pioneers.

Vol State finished off with another brilliant pitching performance on Sunday.

Dustin Crabtree (6-2) and Matt Smith combined on the complete-game seven-hitter.

Crabtree allowed just six hits, one run and struck out five in seven innings of work. Smith notched his fourth save of the year.

Bratcher went 4-for-4 with an RBI and Watkins was 3-for-5 to lead a 12-hit VSCC attack.

Lynch, who had a huge series, drove home a run and scored a run, while Humphrey was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

The Pioneers got on the board in the bottom of the second. With one out Humphrey singled, stole second and scored on Bratcher’s single.

The Pioneers collected two more in the bottom of the fifth. Lynch singled to lead things off and went to second on a Richardson sacrifice.

Pulley reached on an error to put runners at first and third. After a flyout, a passed ball scored Lynch and moved Pulley to second.

Humphrey’s RBI-single then plated the third run of the game.

Cleveland State cut things to 3-1 in the top of the sixth, but the Pioneers closed the scoring and added an insurance run in the bottom of the frame.

With one on and one out, Watkins singled and Harp walked to load the bases.

Lynch followed with a sacrifice fly for the 4-1 lead.

Smith struck out a batter and allowed just one hit over the final two innings to shut the door on the win.

As impressive as the Vol State wins were, I think the even more impressive wins were the Chattanooga State wins at Walters State. Chattanooga swept a doubleheader from the "arguably" hottest team in the conference at THEIR home AFTER having been beaten 9-0 in the first game. Coming off a "so-so" first year, the Tigers have done extremely well and rebounded from some losses that just shouldn't have happened.
Looks like there are about 11 teams that could win the thing. Looks like about all the teams have beaten each other at least once at one time or another. Why don't they just make the tourney an 11 team double elimination tournament? Give the top 2 teams a bye and then get it on and see who the best team in the state is. I have not watched any games in the tjcaa this year but I hear this is the MOST competetive year it has been in a while. Where is the state tourney held at this year? Good luck to the teams who make the double elimination round!
