TennDad - Congratulations on the win and the job your son did! I'm disappointed my Tigers didn't make it, but they gave it a good run. We watched Vol State yesterday (Sunday)and they looked really good. I'll have to say that out of the six teams we watched on Sunday, I thought they looked the most solid. Really liked the catcher and 1st baseman. The whole team looked good though. Good luck to Vol State!
Walters 7 Motlow 3

Tuesday's Games:
G15 3:00 Vol State vs Motlow
G16 6:00 Walters vs Columbia State

This bracket is kinda weird.

Everyone has 1 lose except for Walters. What if Columbia beats Walters are they done with one loss? It shows the winner of G15 against the Winner of G16 on the bracket. Eek

Columbia State's baseball tradition is rich.

And despite some subpar seasons in recent years and a 10th-place finish in the 11-team TJCCAA, the Chargers are one of four teams still alive when the NJCCAA Region VII Tournament enters its fifth day Tuesday at Dave Hall Field.

Thanks to some power from unexpected sources, the last one a grand slam in the bottom of the ninth by Miles Hartsfield, the Chargers outlasted Jackson State, 12-9, thus eliminating the season champion Generals (37-18) from postseason play.

The comeback was ignited by seldom-used freshman Andrew Gannon with an inning-opening deep double. Gannon, the designated hitter, had blasted two power blasts over the fence earlier in the game to pump up the Chargers, who also received a second-inning roundtripper from Mark Hartsfield.

The Hartsfields are freshman twin brothers and an unnamed source (their granddad Wayne Hartsfield of Columbia) had said that Miles had indicated that before the game was over, he was going to match his brother's drive.

Also playing a role in the ninth inning was an infield single by Zak Smith and a walk to Grant Nickell. And you can throw in a scoreless ninth inning of pitching by Randall Hodge, who was making his third appearance in four games, including a complete-game victory last Friday.

Aiding the three-hit, four-RBI game by Gannon were Tyler Boshers (two hits, two runs, RBI) , Miles Hartsfield (two hits) and Jeff Whitaker (two hits, two RBI).

Ben Wilshire, Jason Lenard, Mike Maicco and Ryan Steen all saw mound duty.

Phillip Riley, the third of three hurlers for Jackson (37-19), had three RBIs with a homer, double and a single.

Columbia State (24-30) will play at 6 p.m. Tuesday against Walters State (42-14), who defeated Motlow State, 7-3.

The Bucks (38-17) will play at 3 p.m. Tuesday against Volunteer State (34-17), which eliminated Hiwassee (21-36).

Wes,
TJCCAA has used this format for a few years now. The method is odd but makes sense when you see it work.

If Walters wins they go directly to game 16 and Columbia is eliminated. The winner of the Vol State Motlow game would need to defeat the "non-loser" Walters in this case twice.

If Walters loses they advance to game 17 and wait for a winner between Columbia, Motlow and Vol State. One game at that point ... all would have losses.

The format eliminates a bye, to the winner's bracket finalist (Walters) and continues to emphasize the need for a deep pitching staff.
hsbbweb,

Also, this is the same format that is used at the National tournament and at every regional tournament across the country. Uniformity is very important at this level and beyond.

About the previous post concerning Columbia State.....yes, there tradition is rich but the actions and conduct of that program has become highly questionable. Comments around the league are the "inmates are running the asylum" there and that is a concern. Also, having the tournament at your HOME site is a HUGE advantage to them and neutrality should be an issue. You gotta like a team that hosts a "neutral" conference tournament but insists on ALWAYS having their usual dugout and wearing what THEY want to wear regardless of home or visitor.

Slickfielder:
Coach Painter was coaching at Columbia State before I was born! Cool I did get to talk to him last year during a Padres tryout in Columbia and he sounded like he was getting close to retiring after a legendary coaching career. But who knows, he's like the energizer bunny and he keeps going, and going and going!

I know some would say the program is better off if he walked away but there is also some who think he has done enough for Columbia State to leave on his own terms. noidea I just hope for the best for the coach and program.

Congrats on a great 2005 season, You had me scared the last weekend of the conference season, because you were right on our heels.

lafmom: This is my first year with Junior college since my oldest is at Middle Tennessee State but I'm learning the ropes. I do feel like the sounds stadium in Nashville would be a better (neutral) site!

or Vol State ! Big Grin

The tournament was held a couple of years back at Smokies Park, in Sevierville. I loved that! :-)

Volunteer has hosted it before as have a couple of others. Having lights is a must and not all the conference schools have them.

I have been told by a couple of the Tennessee juco coaches that they do not want the tournament at their places due to the tremendous amount of work involved. Keep in mind that most of these schools do not have "grounds crews" The players and coaches have to prep the field, etc.

Columbia has the luxury of Southern Athletic Fields being close.

One final thought ... Columbia has not won the tournament in several years. Advantage? The strongest team and pitching staff still prevails.

Bob - I almost asked if any thought had ever been given to having this tournament in Sevierville. I would think that would be a great place to host the tournament.

I will say, that Columbia appeared to do a great job with the fields. My son commented while we were there Sunday, how their folks (whoever they were) jumped in between games and got the field ready in a very prompt manner. Also, there was plenty of parking available which was nice.

Wherever it's at, I hope to be there for the finals next year! Smile

Walters State held off a late Columbia State comeback, producing a 7-6 victory to advance to Wednesday's 3 p.m. championship round of the NJCAA Region VII/TJCCAA Tournament at Dave Hall Field.

The Senators (43-14) will meet Volunteer State (35-17). The Pioneers must win twice to advance. The winner hosts the Georgia state champion, Young Harris (51-9), in a best of three playoff next week to determine a representative to the NJCAA World Series in Grand Junction, Colo.

Young Harris defeated South Georgia, 11-3, in its title game.
Surprising Columbia State (24-31) moved within one in the top of the ninth when Tyler Boshers bashed a leadoff homer over the left field fence.

Grant Nickell received a two-out walk before Zane Stone, the third Senators pitcher, forced his third groundout of the inning to record a one-inning save.

The Chargers entered the top of the eighth trailing by three when Miles Hartsfield and twin brother Mark Hartsfield stroked consecutive singles. With one out, Tyler Farrar doubled to rightcenter, scoring Miles but a relay throw home resulted in Mark being ruled out.

It appeared that the Charger arrived ahead of the ball but that catcher Jon Edmonds had his left leg blocking Hartsfield's sliding effort, and the Senator was able to then grab the relay throw from second baseman Zac Bowman and apply the tag to the blocked-off Columbia player.

Walters pitcher Cole Draughn fanned the next Charger before being greeted to lead off the ninth by the homer from Boshers. Draughn was then replaced by Stone.

Ben Wilshire, the third Columbia hurler, held the Senators without a run in the bottom of the eighth.

Walters had a 13-11 advantage in hits, with Bowman going 3-for-3 with two intentional walks. Bowman's three-run, full-count homer in the third inning gave the Senators a 4-3 lead.

C.J. Lee and Jason Gray also had three hits for the Senators.

Boshers was 2-for-3 and scored three times for Columbia. Zak Smith and both Hartsfields had two hits apiece for the Chargers. Andrew Gannon and Smith had two baggers.

Luke Lamm and Jason Lenard both pitched 3.1 innings before Wilshire took over for coach Jim Painter's gallant Chargers, who came on strong after a 10th-place finish during the TJCCAA campaign.

Volunteer St. 11
Motlow St. 10

The Pioneers outhit the Bucks, 16-12, but the key in the outcome were seven Motlow miscues leading to five unearned runs.

Vol grabbed an early 7-1 lead, but Motlow rallied for four runs in the top of the fifth. The Pioneers answered with three in their half of the frame, and the Bucks tallied two in the sixth to reduce the deficit to three, 10-7.

A Pioneer run in the seventh was the difference as Motlow, which stranded nine runners, scored three in the ninth.

Ahmir Watkins and Joel Lynch had three hits apiece, and Garrett Harp, Michael Richardson, Danny Pulley and Heath Puryear two apiece for the winners.

Chris Beatty pitched the first five innings to gain the win. David Strothman and Dustin Crabtree worked in relief, with Wesley Nolen being called on to get the save by retiring the two batters he faced.

Neylan Roberts, a freshman from Mt. Pleasant, had a double and a single in three trips in a relief role for Motlow. Carlo Rosairo provided a home run and a single. Matt Gray was 2-for-2, and Glenn Rogers also boomed a roundtripper.

Zach Gray hurled the first 2.2 innings and took the loss. Mike Moeller, Scott Miller and Nick Davis pitched in relief.
Walters State scored five first inning runs and coasted to the NJCAA Region VII/TJCCAA baseball championship Wednesday at Dave Hall Field on the Columbia State campus.

The Senators (44-14) posted a 14-5 win over Volunteer State (38-18) and will be playing Young Harris, Ga. in a best two of three playoff next week in Morristown to determine the Southeastern representative to the JUCO World Series in Grand Junction, Colo.

Walters eliminated Columbia State 7-6 in the late game on Tuesday. Motlow State was ousted by Volunteer State 12-11 on Tuesday afternoon.

Congrats to Walters state on a great season and good luck against Young Harris!

clap
