TENTH ANNUAL SMOLTZ-GRISSOM WOOD BAT CLASSIC

The Marquis Grissom Baseball Association, Inc. is proud to present the Tenth Annual Smoltz-Grissom Wood Bat Classic on Memorial Day weekend 2008. The action begins on Friday, May 23 and extends through Tuesday, May 27 for teams of 6u through 18u hailing from Atlanta, surrounding cities and all over the United States.

The 2008 Wood Bat Classic will be unlike any other Smoltz-Grissom Wood Bat Classic of previous years. Since its founding in 1999, the tournament has given amateur youth teams, ages 6u through 14u, the opportunity to play ball like the Big Leaguers, by playing with wood bats. “I know what baseball has done for me, to be able to be a Big League ball player. Now I want to come back and see young ball players develop and turn into a fine young man,” says Grissom.

Get ready for the ultimate show of Wood Bat Classic competition with two days of championship game play for a grand prize of the10th anniversary medallions and trophies. On Monday, May 26, 6u through 14u teams will play for championship titles at the Braves Baseball Academy fields. At Turner Field, “Home of the Braves,” on Tuesday, the 16u and 18u teams will compete in their championship games.

Memorial Day weekend will be fun-filled and event-packed beginning with a coaches’ luncheon on Friday at the 755 Club at Turner Field and the first tournament games later that evening. After Monday’s championship games, all of the players are invited to enjoy an Atlanta Braves game. Each team will be given 15 tickets to see the Atlanta Braves play the Arizona Diamondbacks, 2007’s NL West Champions. Also on Monday, a Tailgate Extravaganza will be thrown for the 16u and 18u teams playing in the championship game on Tuesday to honor their hard work and effort.

The Smoltz-Grissom Wood Bat Classic tournament’s proceeds will fund scholarships and baseball programs for economically disadvantaged young people. In addition, all tournament competitors will receive gift bags and t-shirts for their participation in the Tenth Annual Smoltz-Grissom Wood Bat Classic. For the public, admission will be absolutely free.
