I know I have said it many times, but thank you to everyone who has been an assistant to help people like me on this forum. I took over a varsity baseball program this year as a non-faculty (dad) varsity baseball coach and although I had coached at many levels, this was a new experience. Many of you answered a lot of my questions, helped me with ideas on developing a dynamic practice schedule and ideas to overall build the program.
Our program was in complete shambles, 5 coaches in 5 years and I'm pretty sure no more than 3 wins in the last 5 years, most games being 3 up, 3 down 15+ 3 inning loses with a squad of no more than 12 players.
This year we carried 18 players and finished the year 5-12 through the regular season and made our first district play-off appearance. Now, in our district every team makes the district play-offs but in the past our school has not even attended...DON'T GET ME STARTED!!! We did not win a district game this year but we were competitive and had the lead in 3 of the 10 district games, 6 games were DH and we just weren't deep enough to be competitive the second game otherwise we would have been competitive in 6 of the 10.
Now it's summer time and, what I believe is the first time ever, we are actually playing summer baseball and I have 22 players on the roster. We still struggle with depth, mainly behind the plate. I have a great catcher but he is playing travel ball and although I would love to have him with me, he is where he needs to be to continue his development. We played a travel team last night and won 8-4 with my ACE pitching 4 innings and striking out 7.
I'm extremely excited about where this program is going and what we have to look forward to for the 2019 season. Thank you again for all your support and help, this is a GREAT forum!
