Player of the week:
D'Alessio batted .524 (11-for-21) in five games last week as the Tigers posted a 4-1 record including a three-game sweep of the Miami Hurricanes down in Coral Gables. The junior first-baseman recorded a 1.286 slugging percentage on the week with four doubles and four home runs, while tallying 16 RBIs and seven runs scored.

Who SHOULD have gotten it:
Freshman Allan Dykstra had one of the single greatest offensive weeks in recent Wake Forest history. The first baseman batted .786 (11-for-14) with five home runs and 11 RBI. He also added three doubles, eight runs scored and drew five walks. Dykstra recorded an absurd slugging percentage of 2.071 and on-base percentage of .850.

You folks tell me. Andy had a great week, but how can you even compare to Allan's week. Obviously, bias against the big frosh from Wake. What a bunch of knuckleheads in the ACC office!

Those are REAL STATS. Clemson must have more pull with the league office. If the following is any more consolation:

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Collegiate Baseball and Louisville Slugger today
named Wake Forest freshman Allan Dykstra their National Player of the
Week for his recent offensive explosion.

Dykstra had one of the single greatest offensive weeks in recent Wake
Forest history. The first baseman batted .786 (11-for-14) with five home
runs and 11 RBI. He also added three doubles, eight runs scored and drew
five walks. Dykstra recorded an absurd slugging percentage of 2.071 and
on-base percentage of .850.

Dykstra opened the week with a school-record tying three home runs
against Davidson on Tuesday. Dykstra was the ninth player in Wake Forest
history to hit three homers in a single game and the first since Jamie
D'Antona against Tennessee Tech (May 26, 2001).

He leads the ACC with 11 bombs and a slugging percentage of .784.
SDBB,
Congratulations on your son being named National player of the week. What an awesome job he is doing this year.

JT,
Not understanding why you would come out and make negative comments regarding the ACC or have to compare one player to another in their accomplishments. Or your comment regarding Clemson having pull with the league office.

Each achieved great success last week and are both highly regarded players within their conference. I have seen many freshman receive that honor, so being an upperclassman has nothing to do with it.
Congrats to Allan and his Dad and to the family D'Alessio.

TPM, whether it's the league office, football officiating, the bias toward "tobacco road", the silly baseball facility at BC, the over the top obnoxious baseball fan's at Duke or a baseball field with no lights at Wake, I believe that criticism bequeaths positive change. These are a few area's imo, that need to be addressed post haste.
As awards go, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and regardless of who wins what, there will always be someone to spin it in a different light. The real winner is the award getter who puts the award behind him and moves ahead, and the other guys who work harder for it the next week.

Congrats to both players and their families.

Don't always agree with the ACC choice player or pitcher of the week. It's nice to see son's team mate get the recognition, and think that SDBB's son is just tearing it up out there. I am one who definetly tries to give recognition to all of our websters players who do outstanding jobs. I too am a bit confused as to why the ACC does what it does.

However, don't see the reason to use this place to slam any conference or imply one school has pull over another, whether it be CU or any other school JMO.
I was slightly distressed to see player's names used in the original post. Every young man deserves the recognition awarded, regardless of anothers accomplishments. BUT, I think every conference is slammed (maybe just a little) whenever someone says..."This is the SEC, or ACC" or whatever conference, when saying (for example) that players should not be seen at the concession stand. Implying that that particular conference is "above" that behavior. Certain conferences have more money at their disposal, certain schools, etc...then again, some of our boys have to buy their "stuff" maybe at the concession stand (mine brings a sandwich and drink to the field), it's a long time they're at the field. Point: a "slam" can be in-your-face, unintentional, or very subtle...it is still a slam.
JT,

Are you raining on a parade....again?

Last checked, one of the Top 25 polls has
8 teams from the ACC and 5 from the SEC team (and 4 from the PAC-10). Is there a Mid-Majors Basketball equivalent in D1 Baseball?

With regards to Duke vs Terps WB tonight, I believe it will be inappropriate for the TV Media to 'slam' Duke Univ and their handling of the criminal investigation of the stripper charges and the entire Duke LAX (-1).

Regards
Bear

ps. Congrats Randy. Find a way to be there!

Catsuremom,
I am sorry that it was taken the way it was by you and when I am wrong, if I offended you i apologize. It was not meant to be a slam other than where was the seriousness in the weekend. By the way, both teams were from the same conference.
I just know that in some conferences, there is a lot at stake. And in some conferences there are a lot of resources available.
The players are provided lots of things, and I personally don't see the value in wondering around the consession stands before a difficult series.
No matter where I sent mine to school, I would have expected that he behave as he should, a player at the next level. Bringing a sandwich and drink to the field had nothing to do with it. Actually pretty nice that he can, as many cannot.

TPP...No need to apologize to anyone for anything. Gees. The kid from Clemson dazzled 'em and so what? Good for him.

This is not a politically correct baseball board.

The SEC, ACC, Pac10 and Big 12 are the BIG DOGS in D1 college baseball. Simple as that.

Just like the Marines....Many are called and few are chosen!

Go MSU Bulldogs in Starkville!!!!
TPM: You did not offend me. No apology needed, I totally respect your opinion. My only point was that a slam is in the eye of the beholder. Not that big of a point anyway!
Been: Your name says it all, you know of what you speak. I was talking about Andy's award...he got it. So he deserved it. Allan is too good not to get everything good he deserves also. Peace.
Interesting stuff, we’ve been following both these players for a long time.

At one time we watched Allan Dykstra as a sophomore in high school throw 90 mph off the mound. With his tall body and obvious arm strength we figured he might end up being a first round pitcher. Of course his bat was a big weapon back then as well. He played in the outstanding Rancho Bernardo program in San Diego. He also played in some of our tournaments with the ABD Bulldogs. Here are some notes from one of those tournaments in 2003.

Allan Dykstra Hitting Notes: great stroke, good rhythm, explodes to ball, excellent hitter, gets backside through, knows how to hit, will use the field and showed plus bat speed against high level pitching. Excellent power potential! PG Grade – 10

Andy D’Alessio is from Barron Collier HS and Naples, FL. We thought he was one of the best hitting prospects in the 2003 class. He played in many PG events and tournaments. In fact, that’s where Clemson first saw him. Here are some notes our scouts wrote on him in 2002.

Andy D’Alessio hitting notes: His hitting ability is right up there with anyone in the country. He creates plus bat speed in a controlled fashion. The ball sounds and looks much different coming off his wood bat. He's a line drive guy with outstanding power potential. PG Grade - 10

Great honors for both players. D’Alessio is a junior now I believe. Dykstra is a freshman. Wow to both!!! Double WOW for Dykstra.

On the season D’Alessio is hitting .343 and leads Clemson with 9 HRs and 37 RBI. Dykstra is hitting .353 and leading Wake with 11 HRs and 33 RBI.

No sense in getting upset. Both players and their parents will end up being very happy if this stuff continues.

Congrats to SDBB, if Andy’s parents come on here, congrats to them as well.
TPM--sorry to get your tiger growl in an up-roar. I was posting out of frustration. Andy had a great week against quality competition, and I REALLY DOUBT Clemson has pull with the ACC--we all know that Coach K has a corner on that market Smile
Allan and his dad are friends and I get fired up when I percieve injustice done--and Allan got HOSED on this one.
Allan and Andy are both great players. PG has scoop for sure.

Boston Red Sox must of liked west coast HS LHH Alan Dykstra as well in 2005 draft and probably knew in advance AD would be heading to college and didn't draft high for that reason. Is that the case SDBB ? East coast ACC team lucky to have such a pure hitting freshman and his experience in this tough and "very competetive league" will prepare him for 2008 draft. Hope and pray he remains healthy and gets education in meantime. College oriented MLB teams are plentiful and draft many players just like Alan and get them through minors rather briskly. Hope this will be case for AD.

Clemson's Andy D'Alessio is draft eligible this year and I have watched him closely and certainly feel that he could hit with wood. His swing indicates that he can make adjustment from metal to wood. The HR he hit this past weekend to opposite field against Hurricanes did get a little help from large aluminum sweetspot but the other AB's I have seen of ADA this year were good AB's and all balls jumped off bat and very close to sweet spot with the exception of above-mentioned opposite field HR.

Hats off to both of these hitters and congratulations to HSBBW posters for giving us prospects to follow and promote that are as good as these two are.

You are all winners ! peace, Shep

As you probably know, with the number of kids that want to play ball at RBHS, Sam Blalock very seldom allows Ps to hit, and doesn't let INFs to Pitch (although there has been a one exceptions at 1b - Matt Wheatland). Allan's junior year they had several senior pitchers, the coaches and Allan decided to concentrate as a position player.

He's talked to the Wake coaches about Pitching again, but their response was they didn't want to put too much on a Freshman and they really wanted him to concentrate on his bat. Although, Allan has told me they may let him RP next season... and coach Sinacori was a big reason he chose Wake. He likes hitting, and is glad he has the opportunity to play every game and face top notch competition and help his team... "and God willing...." he'll learn his clichés..... Big Grin

The ACC is a real Horse race this year.

Yes, It was our plan all along for Allan to go to College, as he is a very good student also. I personally believed Allan needed the maturing process college provides, He is still 18 and just recently slowed down growing (at least upwards). That word got out on the scouting Grapevine..

He did get inquires as to what it would take to sign prior to the draft, but Boston wasn't one of them. A few teams said he was a top ten round talent, but we wanted at least an equivalent Scholarship amount and a little more to pass up school.

Theo Epstein and several Scouts were at least one of his HS games and watched a separate BP session. Boston, did make an offer, but they had several supplemental high picks, and knew school was important to us, and left it at that... Although they did ask if he would consider a JC and become a draft and follow, but the quality Wake Forest education was more important at this time.

And so far everything has worked out very well.
SDBB,

Thank you for the respectful reply and for the insight about AD's situation because you certainly didn't have to share that with us but your honesty and up-front nature is recognized and appreciated more than you'll ever know. We are fortunate to have AD/him over here on the East Coast and Wake Forest is definitely lucky to have such a true pure hitter as freshman who has stepped up to plate as your son has. Wow!
He is absolutely knocking the cover off the baseball and worthy of all baseball has to offer. The relief pitching possibilities also sound great ! Thanks for all the emails and PMs. I once again feel good about my efforts here and have chose to return. peace, Shep
P.S.-Thanks everybody and BTW, I saw "all" of your posts before they were deleted and especially thank the mom of freshman player I helped out a few months ago and do remember, will answer message after school tomorrow. peace again, Shep
