Leadership is often a common topic of discussion amongst my peers. I love evaluating leadership styles and dissecting principles that govern successful teams and/or organizations. How do you teach leadership principals to your youth athletes?

Some of Our Thoughts
Let's have a great season this year. I can't wait!

I'll start with organization.
It's tough to have effective practice sessions when players don't know their responsibilities.
So the first thing I like to see is a player that shows up on time and is prepared to begin at the prescribed time.
If he can not exhibit this requirement then he will more than likely lose out on both playing time or worse a roster spot.
When a player grasps the role he has designated and what is required of him in the way of performance, then he starts to understand the objective of practice.
This, in my opinion, creates team unity and thereby channels the effort of the players into learning skills that will allow them to play at their best on a consistent basis.
You can start to evaluate a player's desire this way when practice becomes monotonous.
It is not always the top talent that shines through at this point but it will be the ones that worked their hardest during drills to become better that earn PT.

To help reinforce leadership skills players to need to held responsible for all aspects of practice.
This includes helping to set up and take down equipment as needed.
Invole older players to work with younger players by leading drills and working with them.
This helps to unify the team and provides a sense of ownership for the individual.

Leadership comes in many forms whether it be by the "Great Communicator" or the "Leader by Example".
I think that the methods of teaching this are very diverse and will change periodically dependent upon the coach's personal make-up and the type of individual that composes that year's squad.
