HaverDad, from another thread:

quote:
I once picked up Mark Fidrych hitchhiking after a game, when he was working his way down through the minors.

I'd been telling my son about The Bird a few weeks ago, and found a few articles.

My favorite part of one of those articles:

Before leaving the field after each victory, Fidrych darts from player to player, shaking hands with each of his teammates who took part in his latest success.

"They're the ones who are making me. I don't make them. If I was making myself, I'd be striking out everybody. If they don't play well behind me, I'm not even here. I can't believe what these guys are doing for me. I feel so good. I don't know how to say thanks."

One of my best friends who helped start Perfect Game with us years ago is Bruce Kimm. Bruce, who later played for several years and was the Cubs manager one year before retiring, was called up to the Big Leagues because of Mark Fidrych. He was the only catcher Fidrych would throw to and caught all of the games he pitched in that great rookie year. Oddly enough, Bruce had a much longer career than Fidrych.

Needless to say, we have heard many "Bird" stories that have not been printed. The main thing was that Mark Fidrych was very special in many ways. And being flaky was an understatement!
