I read this on the Recruiting Forum on HSBW, and thought it was interesting. Just thought it would be worthy of discussing. I know there are many different opinions on this matter, so this could be interesting. My son is on the cusp of the recruiting process, so I am learning. This is the quote that discusses the possible end to early verbal commits: Let us know what you think!

This is from Inside Higher Ed today, that could be of interest:

"A proposal to prohibit early verbal scholarship offers -- a controversial practice that permeates football and men’s basketball -- is among the major pieces of legislation on the docket for next week’s National Collegiate Athletic Association convention in San Antonio.
....
The major proposed rule change on the docket for this year's convention, introduced by the Division I Recruiting and Athletics Personnel Issues Cabinet last summer, would ban institutions from making verbal offers of athletic scholarships to high school students in all sports before the July 1 following their junior year. Further, institutions would have to have high school transcripts on file with the grades of their potential recruits’ first five semesters of high school before extending a verbal offer."

Great rule.

The later the better.
Agree with Ken, maybe even a step further, how about: Eliminate the verbal offer all together. Once they have the transcripts on file then all offers must be in writing and give the player *** number of hours (days) to return it or it's voided.... This will make schools think about their offers a little more, stop them from offering to many at one time, eliminate schools from taking offers back, make players make a decision.... almost like a real business would handle it, but that's logical.
