Performance is determined by a combination of physical skills and mental skills. How important is the mental side of the game?
Follow up: how much time do your student-athletes spend training their mental skills? Do they have a clear understanding of how to win the mental side of the game? Do they know how to think in ways that consistently build confidence, even after bad outcomes? Do they know how to clear their mind and have a tunnel-vision focus on the task-at-hand?
If not, this information which leads to both performance enhancement and personal growth is out there. If you don't get it from me at CoachTraub.com, I encourage you to get it somewhere.
What are some favorite sport psych books? Here are mine (excluding my own):
The Mental Game of Baseball
all by H.A. Dorfman (He's AWESOME!)
Mind Gym, by Gary Mack
Heads-Up Baseball by Ravizza and Hanson
Mastering Your Inner Game by David Kauss
Finally, a self-plug from a thread about one of my seminars in San Antonio from sanantonio5abaseball.com, posted today: One of the players who attended the seminar in Spring Branch on Sunday night went 3 for 4 last night with a Grand Slam and 2 doubles. Not bad for the #9 hitter who was fighting for a starting position. Definite correlation to his attendance and hitting last night! The proof is there!
