Performance is determined by a combination of physical skills and mental skills. How important is the mental side of the game?

Follow up: how much time do your student-athletes spend training their mental skills? Do they have a clear understanding of how to win the mental side of the game? Do they know how to think in ways that consistently build confidence, even after bad outcomes? Do they know how to clear their mind and have a tunnel-vision focus on the task-at-hand?

If not, this information which leads to both performance enhancement and personal growth is out there. If you don't get it from me at CoachTraub.com, I encourage you to get it somewhere.

What are some favorite sport psych books? Here are mine (excluding my own):

The Mental Game of Baseball
all by H.A. Dorfman (He's AWESOME!)

Mind Gym, by Gary Mack

Heads-Up Baseball by Ravizza and Hanson

Mastering Your Inner Game by David Kauss

Finally, a self-plug from a thread about one of my seminars in San Antonio from sanantonio5abaseball.com, posted today: One of the players who attended the seminar in Spring Branch on Sunday night went 3 for 4 last night with a Grand Slam and 2 doubles. Not bad for the #9 hitter who was fighting for a starting position. Definite correlation to his attendance and hitting last night! The proof is there!

While I have always believed in the power of positive thinking, I have seen it in action this past week. Two of the players from our team, including my son, attended Coach Traub's Performance Enhancement Seminar in Spring Branch last Sunday night, and on Monday night, my son's teammate hit a grand slam, and 2 doubles, going 3 for 4 with 7 RBI's. The next game, on Thursday, my son hit went 3 for 3 with a grand slam and 2 doubles, racking up 4 RBI's. Today, he went 3 for 4 with another grand slam, a 3 run homer, and a double for a combined effort of 9 RBI's. These two boys are both juniors - one is the leadoff hitter, and one is the #9 hitter, and since the seminar, they have upped their batting averages, their team's wins, and their teammates' attitudes. I firmly believe it is due, in a large part, to the tips they received from Coach Traub at his seminar.
Congratulations to these MacArthur HS student-athletes. That's so exciting! They deserve all the credit, as outcomes like these are obviously not the norm for me.

H. A. Dorfman's other books are:
The Mental ABC's of Pitching
The Mental Keys of Hitting, and
Coaching the Mental Game.
Sorry, they got cut off by my poor use of italics last time.

Still wondering: how important do YOU think the mental side of the game is in TX HS Baseball? Favorite books?
