The straightening of the front arm creates stretch between the hands and front foot, which in turn helps to hold the stretch until the opening of the hips and rearward movement of the bathead completes the stretch of the core.

The way you straighten your front arm without locking it, is the same way you do when you do squats without locking the knees. I'll rephrase, replace straighten with extend, if that helps.

Oh, yes, I see that happening in every Major League swing I've seen. Some extend it more than others because of muscle restrictions and pretty much all keep it until "go".
