I was watching the Fiesta Bowl yesterday with a couple friends and one of them revealed that his father wrote the book "The Lords of Baseball."

I had heard about the book but haven't read it. It's more or less of an expose of the franchise owners during the Jackie Robinson era. The author was a sportswriter, then long time PR guy for the Dodgers during the Robinson era.

The book was written in 1976, and rumor has it that the Dodgers owner was so upset he tried to buy every printed copy to keep it out of circulation.

My friend and his brothers decided to republish it after his dad died in the late 1980s.

Has anybody read it?

How are you doing buddy? Enough rain for you there in soggy Portland? Did Santa bring you that All Season snorkel that you were hoping for? Commuting will be a breeze with that! Just remember that you must snorkel with at least one other snorkler in the diamond lane on the Banfield Expressway. Cardboard cut-outs of Jacques Costeau won't fool those Oregon State troopers!

The Lords of Baseball...haven't read it. Did happen to read The Lord of the Fly Balls by Wright Fielding. Captivating tale of two Little League teams stranded on a deserted baseball diamond...one team plays by the rules and the other team tries to rule through intimidation...I don't want to ruin it for you if you haven't read it yet...but when the creepy guy selling cotton candy on a pike shows up it gets downright scary...

That's pretty cool about your friend and his father, the author. I'll bet he is interested in how his father's controversial book was received...keep us posted.

Happy New Year to you and your family.

Hey Woodie!
Happy New Year to you too.

Yes we are soggy here in Portland but not nearly as bad as those poor chaps in California who just aren't nearly as absorbent as we are.

I browsed around the web about the book.... I guess it is quite the classic. It has its own place in Cooperstown. It also is where a couple well known phrases were coined: Baseball owners are "little boys with big wallets" came from it.

Anyway, I'm gunna get myself a copy.

Hope you are well.

Here's the difference with CA...

Last week in CA it was doom and gloom, rivers over banks, parades getting rained on literally and figuratively,...

Two days later it's sunny, the fields bright green and 67 degress. Son went out in shorts and short sleeves for pitching and hitting....

It's already outddor baseball here baby....(sorry, had to let you'all know that we're doing just fine out here on the left-out coast...)
