I don't know anybody in the area (The infamous "O C") who is happy with this change. We feel as tho Moreno sold out ... don't know who he is trying to market to. To modify a famous movie quote ... "If you win, they will remember your name"

Many of us feel like he should have purchased the Dodgers ... then they would not have had a name change AND they might still have some of their best players.

Frown
Will it be the Orange County Angels next? Or the West Coast Angels of Anaheim and the Greater Los Angeles Area? What's in a name? Do they honestly think the name change will attract more paying customers?

Of course, we ARE talking about it and I guess that was the first object of the excersize.....

Wait! This makes them Los AAA. Wink Is that a commentary on their talent level?

As a SoCal resident who doesn't live in Orange County and who was a fan of the Los Angeles Angels when they played in Los Angeles I think it is ridiculous. They could be the California Angels again but they aren't even close to being in Los Angeles. Anybody notice that the "Los Angeles" Rams made the playoffs?

They're already drawing a lot of fans to the ballpark so they must be trying to expand their TV base in the LA area.
But you'd have to get Paul Sr./Jr. to want to relocate to the west coast Orange Co. instead of the east coast Orange Co.

I agree about the name change though ... pretty lame. Not to offend anyone, but if names are just about appealing to the biggest nearby media market, how about the "San Francisco Athletics of Oakland", "San Francisco Kings of Sacramento", "Los Angeles Chargers of San Diego".

There has to be a better way to re-negotiate the stadium lease contract ... maybe return to the "California Angels" as a team name, but grant the city of Anaheim the exclusive name rights on the stadium, which has been call Anaheim Stadium, Edison Stadium/Field, and now Angel Stadium.
It's all about $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. Nothing more and nothing less.

This particular name they've hatched is just to get around a legal "loophole" since the Angels' stadium lease requires that the team's name have the word "Anaheim" in it. Moreno has been pushing for months to just change the name to Los Angeles Angels.

Using the Los Angeles name gives the Angels a different (TV and other advertising) market share, however the heck that is done, under the terms of the MLB and other contracts.

I suppose Moreno also thinks this name change will get the LA area to embrace the Angels, which it really never has, even when the Angels played in L.A. They've been advertising all over the L.A. area recently.

Actually, Moreno doesn't really need to go to any steps except to hope that the Dodgers keep their present ownership and GM. Given their recent roster moves (Bye Bye LoDuca, Green, Beltre, Lima, Finely and hello Jose Valentin, Ricky Ledee and Jeff Kent laugh), along with the team's recent obscene raise in ticket prices, Dodger fans may well be changing allegiances without any nudge from Moreno.
