The Red Sox want eyes on the ground to be the first informed on prospects.
Exactly RJM. It makes me wonder where baseball is going next. Most clubs have scouting orgs and farms in the Caribbean/South America. Sox made inroads & relationships in Japan years ago with Dice-K. Now it is South Korea. I'm wondering if other MLB clubs are doing the same.
The benefit of foreign signings of young prospects is they come cheap. The Carribean is the old frontier. Asia is the new frontier. It's not like paying a signing bonus to a top ten rounds pick or a huge contract for established Japanese and Cuban players.
I have a friend who is in an executive position with a big league team who is working on developing advanced metrics in NPB, the Japanese professional league. There are a lot of things going on in the international realm of baseball. I think it's absolutely wonderful for the game.
