I was just reading an article on comcast that Major League Baseball might not let the Astros close the roof at the Juicebox. Many of the Astros players are mad because they will be losing a big advantage: the crowd noise, which has a habit of throwing off opposing players. Here are some numbers- Astros 36-17 with roof closed, 15-11 with roof open. Plus, Roy Oswalt said he would rather pitch indoors. MLB did this to the D-backs in '01.

Question: should it be up to MLB to decide whether or not the roof is closed?

just found out why MLB wants the roof open. They want to be able to get their overhead blimp shots of the field. ridiculous. that makes me laugh and it also ticks me off as a houston fan. No one cares about the overhead shots during a baseball game. I think MLB should start worrying about things that matter, not blimp views and got milk ads.
I guess the baseball purist is a thing of the past. Isn't this great game meant to be played in the outdoors? Rspecially the fall classic. I wonder what Casey Stengel or Babe Ruth would have to say about playing their beloved game indoors. I for one, think the commissioner is making the right decision, even if it is for the wrong reasons. Besides, the people on the rooftop in left field would have had a restricted view had the roof been closed.
I do agree that one of the beautiful things about baseball is tradition, and that games should be played outdoors, on real grass, and in daylight. However, if Bud Selig and Major League Baseball are worried about upholding baseball tradition, they should do it all year long, and not simply during the World Series. I understand that the World Series is a major symbol of MLB and the Fall Classic is when the most people are tuned in, but closing the roof at Minute Maid does take away an important advantage that home field brings to a team down in the series and fighting to get back into it. I don't think they should give the Astros Organization authority to open or close the roof during the season and then take it away all of a sudden.

Having been to the game last night I dont think it made a difference one way or the other except it sure got cold as the sun went down. Not sure such a global statement "Wouldn't a retractable dome cost more than a closed dome?" is accurate. We don't have the high costs of labor as some people in the U.S. and it sure is pretty at night with the dome open. You also wouldn't want it opened at 1 pm in 110 degree weather during summer day games.
