I hope some of us had the chance to watch the movie "The Rookie" on ABC Family tonight (I think it was also on last night??). What a wonderful, wonderful movie that really digs to the heart of anybody who is a baseball person and is also raising children!! Sometimes we may forget what the game is all about here as we get wrapped up in recruiting and bad coaches and all the other distractions! Can't count how many times I've seen this movie, and as my children get a little bit older each year (4,2,3mos) it really is a reminder of how we as parents can have an amazing impact on our children, and how so many of life's lessons can be learned through the lessons of this wonderful game!! For us baseball people, the game can take control of a part of our hearts that we don't even recognize, until we see the lessons and examples laid out in front of us, as they are in this wonderful, and true, baseball story!

Great movie- anyone with aspirations with baseball (even if you're under than 38) enjoys that. There are a few very good scenes:

When he is turning off the TV, and theres a relief pitcher jogging on to the field (not that they ever show that part on TV), and you see the look on his face- he may be that person.

When he tests his velocity on the car-thing, he fist lobs one and it's in the 40s, so he gets all pumped- stretches and fires one: 76. All disappointed he trecks to get the balls, and the lights blink, and 96 fills in.

The part after he calls his wife and explains to her that he is done, goes to a bar, sees himself in TV, then watches the kid game. In the clubhouse, he walks up behind his teamate: "You know what we get to do today, Brooks? We get to play baseball!" I use that line with my friends.

Great movie.
My favorite part -- and there are many -- is when, early in the high school season after his team loses another game, he tells his players that it's okay to want to grow up and get a job on the rigs and live their lives there.. but why not dream the big dream and go onto something great?

We work hard to afford ourselves freedom and dreams. Never stop dreaming, because it is utterly human.
Catch - That line in the Rookie that they get to play baseball is my favorite line in the movie as well! The awe, respect, and joy that he has on his face as he enters the stadium right before the clubhouse scene is great! Anyone that loves baseball or that's caught a dream can understand what he's thinking and feeling!

Although Morris retired from baseball this spring—tendinitis and elbow surgery quickly intruded on his short major league career—he says he will cherish the memories, especially visiting Yankee Stadium. "One night I was in right field during batting practice, in shouting distance of the bleacher creatures," recalls Morris. "They figured out who I was…. ‘Morris!!! You suck! It’s a great story but you suck!’ That was pretty cool," laughs Morris.

The Rookie
Jim coached teams for us in the WWBA Fall Championship in Jupiter for a couple years before the movie came out. In fact, in 2000 his team won it. Interesting enough on his team that year were a couple lefties who are now in the Big Leagues. Scott Kazmir and Jeremy Sowers. Delmon Young, Landon Powell and several others now playing professional baseball were on that team.

I will always remember how much Jim Morris enjoyed coaching that team. He came back again the following year to do it again. There was no question… It was obvious he truly loved the game and enjoyed working with young players. The kids loved him!

His story is great, but there’s even more to Jim Morris!
