Like the interview posted. He sure seems like a great coach. Josh Holiday

Would of loved my son to play for a coach with his philosophy and mentality.

Loves his players and compliments them.

Would of loved my son to play for someone like him. Thank God that was rectified since son left.

I love the parity and seeing some different teams these last few years.

"we treat our kids like a million bucks every day" wow

Great Interview

Yup... Even a better guy in person... It was the easiest non-decision, decision we ever had to make...

Do you or will you have a player at OSU.  Josh Holiday is awesome.

YES, will have... Son's an Incoming Freshman... He will be there June 29 for orientation...

Coastal Carolina has done an awesome job, its hasnt been easy to recruit against the larger D2 programs in the state.

OK, now I have to jump in as well- what does this mean?    Are you just trying to get Cleveland Dad riled up ?  I do have a dog in the hunt here- my son is a 2017, chose coastal over a number of other programs- and they weren't D2.  He chose Coastal because of the coaches, facilities, and their ability to develop players, and in his words " I want to go to Omaha".  I don't think this is the last you'll see of Coastal now that they've been there this year.

I am actually congratulating them for a job well done.

I have a friend who is a coach here in Fl for FAU (womans sport). She has told me how hard ig is at times trying to go up against the larger programs FSU, UF.  I think thats a fact in any state.

You can take it anyway you wish. Best of luck to your son.

I actually loved watching the entire press conference with Josh Holiday.

Ive watched all of the games so far and have loved Coastal and UCSB  and Oklahoma.

It is good to see these coaches that have built their programs and are doing things the right way. Honestly did you watch the interview of the Coastal player after the game talk about his program and coach.

You can see it in the players of these programs. They are hungry and its fun watching them.

Congrats for your son getting to

play for Coach Holiday. This is a good opportunity for young players and parents to understand there are lots of outstanding programs besides Pac12, SEC etc. this years college world series in my opinion is great for college baseball.

Ok, point well taken, my point is that I don't think they are recruiting against the larger d2 programs.  They are recruiting against large D1 programs, and I agree that is difficult as they aren't in one of the Big 5 power conferences.    But I know the history of a number of these kids-   Jason Bilous was highly recruited, so was Austin Kitchen-   Coastal signed them over some of the  ACC schools.  I'm sure there are more- Paez, Remmilard, Holmes- although I don't know their stories.    With the exposure coastal is getting  on the national stage now, and the upgrade in facilities which are now second to none- well, maybe they are second to LSU from what I saw on TV, LOL-   I think it's going to be a huge shot in the arm.    I can't wait to see how it all develops.    I apologize for taking the comment personally!

Well, I apologize myself, I meant D1.

Had D2 on my mind lately but I did mean Clemson and South Carolina.

Not sure if you knew, son attended Clemson over 10 years ago and just graduated and was an assistant coach this spring, so I am familiar with south carolina.

All is good.

Quite a College World Series imho.  Two winner take all games to see who plays for the national championship.  Two power conferences still alive in the Big 12 and the PAC 12.  The Big 12 was the power conference of the year this year imho.

Coastal will be moving to the Sun Belt conference next year which should be beneficial to all participants (Appalachian State, Georgia State, Georgia Southern, Troy, South Alabama, Arkansas State, Little Rock, Louisiana-Monroe, Louisiana-Lafayette, Texas-Arlington and Texas State) in that conference next year.

I love.love.love college baseball! The enthusiasm and uniqueness of this event is so much fun to watch. So much is riding on almost every play and the kids are playing for their love of the game, their teammates, and school, the pro game pales in comparison. It really does not get any better two elimination games. Like many others I am pulling for Coastal!

I would agree with most that if you like baseball, and especially if you like college baseball, this CWS is terrific. Really good teams playing high level baseball.  The defense has been darn good, overall.

On the other hand, the attendance at yesterday's games, especially the OSU/UA game was pathetic.

I would guess that this thread on this board might be representative of a bigger reference point which is there is not much general interest in college baseball and the CWS. Disappointing, for sure.

The attendance at day games has never really been great.  Its beastly hot and I admit I was miserable. IMO the absence of the long ball doesnt thrill the ordinary fans who come for the entertainment factor.

Will be interesting to see if they fill seats next week.  How about the tv audience?

I always enjoy the human factor in big venues.  Stories about kids over coming odds, parents or siblings, etc.I heard one story, did I miss others? It was just lacking something. I miss the days of Erin Andrews!

When I saw the small crowd and all the playing with water I checked the weather. It was 90, feels like 97 according to whatever Google uses as a source.

CCU has had to fight to build it's brand. It's a tremendous credit to Coach Gilmore, his staff and all the former players that have played at CCU. My son took an official visit to CCU. Coach Schnall showed us around and took us in the locker room for the pregame meal. Something he said stuck with me. "Don't come here because you can't get an offer from Carolina or State. Come here because this is your first choice and it's where you want to be." I was extremely impressed with them. I imagine that pitch to instate kids sounded like "Don't come here because you can't get an offer from Carolina or Clemson."

This CWS is going to really boost CCU's brand. Both of the teams left have earned it. Arizona is very good and playing great baseball. I expect it's going to be a great 3 game series.

I don't understand the "it was 90" factor in the attendance.  It's summer, it's going to be 90.  We went to the CWS 7 years ago when it was at Rosenblatt.  The place was unbelievable!!  I haven't been to TDA, but it just can't be the same.  Just way too commercialized...and downtown.  Rosenblatt was essentially a baseball field dumped in a residential neighborhood.   Heck, people rented out their backyards and had them turned into full-fledged bars for the tourney run.  It was unlike anything I've ever seen.  Maybe some of you who've been to both can comment, but from the day we left I wanted to get back.....now, unless my son's team makes it I've really got no desire...just don't think the "experience" would be the same

I loved Rosenblatt too and haven't been to TD Ameritrade either, but I still gotta imagine its awfully special.

When our son played there in 2008, the crowd for the Saturday semis wasn't the biggest either.  Don't know why? - but the weather can be tough in Omaha in June/July - I had to make myself keep drinking water/gatorade as I got a little light headed a time or two.

Lets see how the crowd is tonight and tomorrow.  Its been good the last few years for the finals. But I gotta say as TV's get bigger and ultra-definition, I find myself staying home more to watch even a nearby game, regardless of the weather.

I will say this. I'm not too surprised to see Coastal there after I saw them in Baton Rouge. They are one of the best hitting teams in the country. I was a little unsure if they had the pitching to get there, but there is no doubt about their heart and desire. I will agree with another post above about CCU seeming like a team of destiny. I think their story is pretty cool and their coach seems like a great guy to play for. Maybe part of me is rooting for them because they put us out

As a matter of fact, they remind me a lot of LSU's team last year. That team could flat out hit 1-9 but pitching was thin and that is ultimately what cost LSU last year in my opinion

Coach May - your comments are spot on.  They mean those things when they say them.  They like guys to almost recruit them than the other way around.  GK Young is a current example of a kid who always wanted to play for them and he had offers from each of the other D1 powers in the state.  My son recruited them much harder than they recruited him but I think it worked out both ways in the end.

Coastal will always be a blue collar team with a blue collar mentality.  Other than their pitching coach, all their coaches are Coastal guys and they only know one way to play - dirty uniforms and relentlessly pressuring other teams.   They are a team full of hard-nosed grinders like their coach.  Some of their kids may not have been high prospects in high school but many of them have been developed into prospects.

I agree with you about the Omaha brand now being next to their name.  I don't think this is going to be a Stony Brook, Kent State, or even Fresno State situation.  They have the coaching, first class infrastructure, and location imho to sustain things.  They have been playing this style and almost at this level for many years.  You keep knocking at the door and eventually you break through.

Was there in 2006. Its not the same and never will be.

Nice game by JC Coney last night.  Very nice - and a very good example of excellent pitching without overwhelming velocity.  Actually, the same could be said for the CCU starter.

The AZ shift thing - interesting and fun to watch.

But they do need to bring the fences in - will help fan interest a lot.  (Simply cannot believe I am saying that as a parent of pitchers! ).

I wasn't aware CCU had a pitcher on staff who cruised at 84 mph

That said, if you would have told me before that game that our 84 mph guy would only give up three runs and all we had to do was get to their 85-86 guy, I would have liked my chances.

Shocking statement!  When the parents of former college pitchers agree that bringing the Omaha fence in a bit is a good thing for the game then you know you've got an issue.  The NCAA thought the "new" ball would fix everything.  Wrong.  The Omaha field should resemble a normal college field.

He actually only gave up 2, and one of them was a guy he left on base that the subsequent pitcher allowed to score.  Kid did a real good job locating his pitches and his slider was pretty sharp...

Are these their normal velocities? Or are they down a few mph due to being overextended from a long season? These teams haven't had a break since mid February.

Last edited by RJM

RJM - I don't think those are normal velocities for the D1 level.  The CCU kid had hardly pitched at all the last few months so his velocity would not depend on being worn out.  Perhaps his lack of use caused his velocity to dip?  Any pitching people have a theory here?

The average velocities I am used to seeing at the D1 level is about 88mph.  At the college world series, most of the velocities I've seen have been 90 or above.

CD, I feel like I am seeing more and more college coaches recognizing the value of a 'command type' mid-80s pitcher in D1.  As you know, our younger son was one of those.  It takes some 'homework' by a coach to figure it out, but it seems to me its happening more and more...within bounds.

No idea about the CCU pitcher and whether or not he was one of those types while being recruited but it sure sounded like the AZ pitcher was a known and hot LHP/80s commodity (which is a little different than RHP, but still not as easy as an LHP/90s guy).

Quite honestly I think the announcers have wore out the "Brown" defense story. Spray charts, scouting, advanced scouting, tendencies, shifts, is it really rocket science? They have not reinvented the wheel and if you listen to these announcers they have wore it out. Hitters hit. If you "sting" enough balls you score enough runs.

I was going to post the same thing this morning.  Albert Einstein's great nephew coaching the defense.

To be fair, Coastal's worn me out on the stuffed animals.

Just returned from the CWS.... what a game it is! If college ball can be marketed correctly, and can spread to the northeast, there is no reason it can't become as popular as basketball or football (well almost as big). I think the game is in a great place right now, especially with the new bats. What I am trying to figure out is how to get more people in the country knowing about it... any thoughts?

More quality coverage helps.  I know I've watched a lot more College Baseball in the last few years ever since our area got the SEC Network on Cable TV.   Like with anything, hype helps, and hype sells.
