Know of a kid who played at a community college in '07 and '08 seasons. He has not played in, or even attended, college since, but would like to now return and resume his playing career and finish school.

How do the eligibility guidelines (or the 'five-to-play-four' rule) factor in on a case like this? I googled all sorts of info on grades, credits, etc, but couldn't find how the 'ticking clock' might effect this situation.

Any ideas?

D2, D3, and NAIA don't use a 5 year calendar eligibility limit. Only D1 does that. The others have a limit of 10 semesters (or 15 quarters) of full time enrollment. Since the player wasn't enrolled at all, he only used 4 of his 10 full time semesters.

A D2 school famously had a 50 year old football kicker a few years ago.

As Swampboy says, military service, religous missions, Peace Corps, service as a conscientious objector, etc. can pause the D1 5 year clock. The player must enroll immediately at the first opportunity, i.e the clock starts again as soon as the service is over. (14.2.1.2)
