Parents often think certain things are important in being recruited by college and MLB scouts that really are not.
1) My kid gets lessons from this ex MLB player:
Hopefully you are getting good instruction , but just because so and so played major league baseball does not mean he can teach, some can some cant. Some will be honest about your ability when asked, some dont want you to stop paying them if they are truthful about your talents.
2) My kid plays travel ball. Unless it is Team USA, does not mean much, everyone plays travel ball these days. Many who dont even make their high schoool team play travel ball.
3) My kid attended this baseball camp. Yeah if you got check book anyone can attend a college camp. By no way means they gonna recruit you. But if you look good at a camp you can get recruited by it.
4) I played against this top prospect or are teammates of him. Well if you hit top prospect throwing hard, yeah that will get people attention, but just saying so and so struck me out 4 times, doe not help you much. The top prospect can often draw colleges and scouts and you can benefit by looking good at the right time.
5) I struck out these many hitter at this showcase.
Coaches and MLB scouts are looking at tools. If you lack a fastball with movement in the strike zone, the gun goes down fast.
6) My kid owns this $300 bat. Throwing $$$ down on bats does not make you kid a prospect, showing you can hit can.
7) I got a letter to attend this prospect camp. This is not recruitment, phone call and set up a visit and an offer is.
