Dead Period is a time when the college coach may not have any in-person contact with the prospective student-athlete or the prospect’s parents at any time. The coach may write and telephone during this time.

Contrary to popular belief, the quiet period was not created to protect the athlete, it was created so that colleges and coaching staffs get a break from the expense and time away from family of the recruiting trail. As such, the NCAA didn't want to legislate away sources of ancillary income that are so important to assistants to help make ends meet. For that reason, instructional camps, where the coaches attending are paid instructors, are allowed during the quiet periods. These are not "exposure camps", as no recruiting is supposed to occur. I'm new to this process and am confused. The PG national underclass showcases are during the "quiet period" over the holiday week and then in early January. Does the quiet period defined above mean that no college coaches will be in attendance? How does that work? Jr. is thinking about going to Ft. Myers instead of a "camp" at one of the schools he is interested in. If no college coaches will be there it might impact his decision.

Thanks for any input as I try to get my head around this stuff.

If the early signing period is 11/10-17, when can the coaches send the NLIs?

Last year my son had his NLI in hand before the signing period. The Coaching Staff wanted it signed and faxed ASAP which was at precisely 7am (as I recall) on that 1st signing day (the 10th this year). They had all their NLI's in and posted the Freshman signings with associated pictures/articles on their website on the 22nd last year...

I'm sure every School wants those NLI's in as quick as they can get them, before you change your mind and before they begin to make offers to those secondary on their list.

Welcome to the HSBBWeb! With your backround in college admissions, you may find a lot of questions on here where your expertise is a real asset.

Thanks Three Bagger, I have been on the site as a stealth member for a while. I have worked with lots of athletes over the years in my college planning business and as a former admissions dir at a mid major D1; but now that I have one of my own (2013 RHP) I imagine I'll be on here more often. Great site! Seems like a very well informed and supportive community so I will try to chime in when I can help.

Quiet period applies to D1 college coaches.

This is a good showcase, and if the player does well can use for recruiting purposes or can find out what he needs to improve upon. As PGStaff has stated, often college coaches unable to attend showcases call to ask about players.

Dead periods exist during signing periods so that coaches aren't pressuring recruits.

But a coach CAN call or email...with or without pressure.

Does any of this apply to D3 coaches?
CPLZ: You are incorrect. This is straight off the NCAA website. There can be phone and email contact.
