My son is 15 1/2, throws left and normally plays either Rt field, or FB. At the end of last season he decided he wanted to give pitching a try, so last fall we got him in some classes at our local baseball academy to learn proper mechanics, pitcher specific conditions, etc. We've been doing flat ground pitching a few times a week for the last couple of months doing 20 - 30 pitches a session. His velo is still low, but location and movement are getting better. It looks like he'll be playing for a good part of the summer so that means 2 or 3 practices, and a few games a week. He also goes to the gym at least twice a week for core, squats, etc. and hits off the tee every day. I'm not a baseball coach, nor do I play one on TV but I'm trying to come up with a throwing plan that helps him improve but doesn't overdo it given the other stuff he's doing. Here's what I've got thus far.

Pitch (mound) 2 x week. 25 - 30 pitches, add 10 pitches a month so he's throwing 40 - 50 a session by August/September.

Flat ground throwing 2 x week. 10 - 15 min. warmup 10 - 15 min. 60% - 70% velocity.

Long Toss 1 x week.

Pitcher specific conditioning - "throwers 10" 3 x week.

What do y'all think? Too much? Too little? Things that are missing? Thanks in advance for any comments or suggestions.

I would limit the "long" long toss to about 3 times a week. Generally speaking he could follow the long toss with a flat ground. You'll have to pay attention to his arm to figure out how and if you can work bullpens into the equation. I really don't like the idea of max effort throwing more than 3 times a week. JMO. You might want to start out focusing more on the long toss for a while then gradually switch from the "long" long toss to bullpens as he gets closer to the season.

I'd also recommend that he work his way into doing a lot of core work, sprints and lower body weights/plyos. Make sure he builds up to it gradually at that age.
