Hello. My name is Dennis Wilson and I coach the Senior Post 113 American Legion baseball team. I wanted to post on this board and provide some information to any players interested in playing American Legion baseball this summer. We believe we provide the best summer program in the area and an excellent alternative to your local recreational baseball leagues.

American Legion baseball has been around since 1925. On average 52% of MLB players and 80% of college players played Legion ball including 46 MLB Hall of Famers. Many of the best local baseball players and/or coaches played Legion including Michael Cuddyer, Towny Townsend and Gary Lavelle to name just a few. American Legion baseball also provides college scholarship money to eligible college freshmen (see the legion website listed below for details).

We offer 2 age divisions - The Seniors (19U) and the Juniors (17U). Senior teams typically are high school varsity and college freshman players while the Juniors are usually high school JV players. There is no minimum age and it's not unusual to see 13 and 14 year olds playing Junior. Unlike most rec ball leagues we don't accept everyone. You must tryout and make your team.

If you attend any of the following schools you are eligible to play legion ball (not all schools are represented by Senior and Junior teams):

Maury
Granby
Norview
Lake Taylor
BT Washington
Norfolk Collegiate
Norfolk Academy
Indian River
Oscar Smith
Grassfield
Hickory
Deep Creek
Atlantic Shores
Greenbriar Christian
Currituck
Wilson
Churchland
Tallwood
Bayside
Bishop Sullivan
First Colonial
Kempsville
Cox

As you can see we cover most of the tidewater area. Our games are regularly attended by college coaches and MLB scouts (including myself) so if you've got game bring it out. Please feel free to contact me with your questions (asbaseballcoach@live.com) and be sure to visit the national American Legion baseball website at www.baseball.legion.org.

Having played ALB back in my high school days I can attest to what Coach Wilson says about the opportunity to be seen. My own college scholarship offer came from a recruiter who saw me play summer ball through ALB. Most of the college recruiters are too busy with their own programs in the spring and don't get out to see HS games on a routine basis. Summer ball is your best shot, unless you have a HS coach who makes a point to market you.

I have a son who has played ALB the last two years in this area and he's acually enjoyed it more than his HS season. The opportunity to play with other HS ball players around Tidewater is a great way to improve your game. There are certainly alternatives for summer ball that provide great playing experiences. However, I've been very impressed with what I have seen here in District 2 ALB.
Coach Wilson,
We are interested.... do you have a phone number to contact you?

Wow, thanks for all of the emails and inquiries. As several of you pointed out I forgot to post the age cutoffs. In the Senior Division (19u) players may not turn 20 before 1/1/9. In the Junior Division (17u) players may not turn 18 before 1/1/9 (if they do they must play Senior). There is no limit to the number of 19 year olds a Senior team may carry. Hope this helps. Thanks again.
Is Post310(churchland)not fielding a team for lack of players? If so, how can Western Branch players bypass Post 310 and play Post 60 in Norfolk? Even worse, what do you think of a coach for the school these kids could potentially displace, that rumor says he welcomes based upon good competition? Something so simple is not computing.I guess the kids can come and watch,so they can learn? Maybe Cowgill can pitch?
Nomadad, The latest news I have is that Churchland Post 310 may not field a team. I don't know any thing other than that. I do know that the district is aware of the WB situation and the impact on Post 60 if these players go there. I'm absolutely certain that whatever transpires will be within the rules.

Keep in mind that American Legion teams are independent teams that solicit sponsorship from American Legion posts in order to play in the league. Anyone can field a team as long as they have a post to sponsor it and their players meet ALB eligibility rules. There is no Legion or District 2 rule that governs which players a coach must keep as long as they are legal.

Just about every legion team has to make cuts. No coach likes to cut kids but you can only keep 18. My rule is that if you're a returning player in good standing (meaning you show up, have paid your fees, etc) you will not be cut. I also have rules that limit my players participation in other leagues as well. It's give and take. That's just me - I can't speak for the other coaches.
Each post draws from multiple schools with one base school. I don't know all of the schools each post draws from (except mine - Post 113) but I do the base schools and some others (I think). This is for the Seniors, the Juniors are slightly different:

Post 280 IR - Indian River
Post 280 C - Greenbriar
Post 204 C - Grassfield
Post 204 AS - Atlantic Shores, Hickory
Post 113 - Tallwood, Bayside, BS Catholic, Kemps.
Post 60 - Maury, Norfolk Collegiate
Post 327 - Granby, Norview
Post 310 - King's Fork
Post 5 - BT Washington
