Is there a rules distinction between offensive and defensive injuries?

When defensive players get hurt or are hit by a batted ball, they play on as if it didn't happen. The ball has to be tracked down and returned to the infield like any other batted ball.

But when offensive players are hurt, at least in some situations, it seems like the play stops immediately. I saw a situation where a runner coming in from second was hit in the face with a relay on a double play attempt, and the game was halted immediately after the guy went down.

I suppose there could be a distinction in that if a baserunner is hurt and down that he is blocking traffic vis-a-vis trail runners, but that isn't always going to be the case.

What's the rule(s) and what do I tell my kid to do in that situation?

Thanks.

There is no difference. Play should be kept live until it concludes. Then it is killed and the injured player looked after.

The severity of the injury is not a consideration.

Some amateur umpires will consider the age of players and will tend to kill play sooner in the lower age leagues. Tell your players to play on until the ball is killed by the umpire.
