i was on third base and the umpire raised his hand to call time and dust the plate as soon as he was done and got back into his postion the catcher threw the ball back to the pitcher and the pitcher was not paying attention and the ball went by him... the pitcher still thought there was time so he walked slowly to the ball... i dashed home was safe but the umpire sent me back saying he still had time... my coach said i should of got the run cuz play resumes when the ump gets back into postion..who was rite??? what really suxs is that i did not score and we ended up losing by 1
Ted Willams said before he was about to die... " If I had do it all over again I would hit more and weight train more"

The plate umpire was correct to send you back. The ball cannot be made live until the pitcher is on the rubber with the ball, the catcher is in place and the batter is in the box. Then the umpire signals the ball live. He may do this by pointing or saying play. I prefer a verbal "play" so there is no confusion.

The other side of the coin is he can't pick-off or do a hidden ball trick without all those conditions being met.
well, again your coach was wrong and no matter what should have known that....Everyone set and a batter just getting in the box is not the signal for time to be put in.... Once time is called it must be "put back in" to have live action..

Although the proper mechanic is to point at the pitcher and say play....I do know that many umpires will just point or say something else....like "lets go".......

But I'm sure that this is one of those lessons you both will never forget....
