It is never too early to start your research of schools and baseball programs! And its never too early to make grades a priority! For recruiting, its too early for serious interest. I suggest waiting until you have a summer schedule to send and then start letting programs know of your interest. If you are a varsity player this year, you may want to start getting recommendations on local showcases and camps. Congratulations on taking charge of your future! Enjoy the adventure! Smile
I guess I can agree with the "sophmore is a bit early" rationale,
as if you send introductory letter(s) now you'll be entered into their database & begin receiving camp brochures, school brochures, general and academic info promoting the colleges,
AND WITH ... baseball questionairs to fill out.

multiply that by the dozen or so schools you contact & just sorting and organizing all the correspondence can become a real headache, but - a good headache

never do today what you can put off till
tomorrow or next year. Smile

btw, as you say non-athletes begin college contacts early, there is every reason for athletes to do the same.

good luck

It never too early to get exposure. Go to Showcase Forum or Recruiting Forum for lots of insight on the subject. And, follow the Time Line here on hsbaseball web. Keep the grades up & take highest level courses you are can! Be sure you have the NCAA core courses covered & register early in your Jr. Year.
Develope a plan of action with your parents, objectively considering your talent level & budget constraints. Set up a few files & a spreadsheet with contact info. Get your "profile" set up & update it as you need to,...after your HS Spring season, then after this summer, etc. This provides YOU, evaluators & coaches with your "progress picture".
Try to stay organized & methodical, similar to a longterm research project!
Good luck!

most of the DI schools are done with recruiting for 07 so they are compiling lists of 08's and 09's to follow... the earlier you can get your name out there the better... remember though, college coaches get hundreds of hand written letter and videos and high school coaches recommendations sent every week and its tough to go through all of them.... if a scout or professional contacts them on your behalf they tend to take more notice
