MIT Admissions

I don't mean to be smug. But if you're smart enough to go to MIT I'm guessing you're smart enough to find the number. I found it in ten seconds.

Was that Coach Carroll or their head coach? I found the head coach's number on their website and the athletic office and all that, but was unable to find Coach Carroll's (their pitching coach). I'd just rather call him because he was the only coach from MIT at a camp I went to recently and thought he might be remember me and take me more seriously since he's seen me play as opposed to some one cold calling the head coach.

Maybe only his email listed for a reason.  I would use that means of contact until he gives you his phone number.

...correct, and the Athletic Department main number will lead to someone who could transfer you to the pitching coach.

Call the head coach's number. It will probably be answered by a secretary. Ask for the person you want. If the head coach answers the phone what an opportunity to impress him with your maturity. Be prepared.

The board is here to help. But there are some things kids should take the initiative to do rather than asking for adults to do it for them. When I see this I wonder if parents have done too much already rather than letting the kid face the real world. 

Really not loving that you seem to want to turn this into a "this kid's just dumb" or I've been coddled too much by my parents, but to address my mindset here...  I thought about the different ways I could get in touch with them, and I thought directly calling the coach that I've actually spoken with would stick in their mind the most.  I'm aware there are other options, I thought I just might as well check every resource to try to set myself up best to succeed.

Josh ... I question the motivation of a kid coming online asking for a phone number. There are things you should be able to do yourself. Good luck.

I agree... The site is here to help... it has helped a parent like me immeasurably over the years and continues to do so on a daily basis!  Hopefully it's a great resource for JoshW too, and welcome aboard Josh!  That said... I think RJM's reply WAS helpful, toward a more effective mindset and approach.

My kids wouldn't have come online asking for a phone number or asked me to do it for them. They know better. I started them on the road to independence when they were little. They both graduated near the top of their class while lettering in multiple sports and going on to college baseball/softball.

 

When my daughter was in college she informed me she scored in the top 5% of the LSAT. She didn't ask me for money for training for the test. She didn't ask me if she should take the test. She just went ahead and did it. She got married before starting law school. When I asked her what she needed for law school she was disappointed I asked. She said she's a married adult and will take care of the bills herself.

I normally like your posts, and generally agree with your opinions, but I think your thoughts on this thread have been a little over the top.  The poster in question, must be doing something right if he could be in consideration for a school like MIT.  Last time I checked, that is a slightly above average school.  In order to be in good enough academic standing to apply for a school like that, he must have his ducks in a pretty good row...

First, I'll say Josh sent a private message that was very impressive. When we first encounter posters on the board what they post will fall into our general impressions. It's why I responded as I did.

 

This next statement has nothing to do with Josh. It has to to with experience. I know intelligent people who attended Ivies and other top universities who couldn't find their way out of a paper bag. I'm related to one. This particular person scored a perfect 1600 on the SATs, graduated from an Ivy PBK and proceeded to be one of the few accepted at a prestigious graduate program. Excellence in the classroom doesn't always mean knowing what to do outside the classroom.

 

If this was meant to be an apology you have a strange way of going about it. 

Book Smarts do not always come with Common Sense - which is what I think RJM was going for and in fact can back up with first hand experience. 

 

I am also of the opinion that if a young person has a brain pan that can get into MIT THAT is impressive and should be respected.

I employ 6 engineers...this conversation makes me laugh as I kind of live it every day!! Very smart men...who just don't always understand the obvious!

I had a neighbor, he was 2-3 years older than me, pure genius.  He graduated #1 in his class from Carnegie Mellon,..  ended up among other things writing physics books,

 

One day he stops at our house and my mom has to show him how to put oil in his car,  he was trying to pour it down the dipstick hole!

 

Of course now he can afford his own private mechanic to do stuff like that for him,….that’s my son’s goal. I will try and show him things and he’ll be like I don’t need to know how to do that I will just hire someone.
